Xbox 360 Live 12 Month Gold Card plus 1 Month Bonus Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)To sum it up quick, this is the best deal you can purchase for Xbox Live.
Here is a quick breakdown:
1 month via Microsoft = $7.99 = $7.99/month
3 months via Microsoft = $19.99 = $6.66/month
12 months via Microsoft = $49.99 = $4.17/month
12+1 months via Amazon = $45.00 = $3.46/month
This card comes with THIRTEEN (13) months of Xbox Live for cheaper than directly from Xbox. I fully recommend purchasing Live via Amazon, but the choice is yours.

Xbox 360 Live 3-Month Gold Kit Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)There is really not much to say about this kit, however I think it is unfair that it received such a poor rating considering the only other reviewer's complaint, that the kit is too expensive, is inaccurate because the one he suggests is actually more expensive.
However, this is truly a passport to an amazing gaming experience. The Xbox Live experience is truly something innovative and relaly really fun, and I would recommend buying an XBox 360 despite the next Playstation and Nintendo stations coming out. However, I also recommend waiting til after Christmas. The rush to get these now is ridiculous, and I have seen some consoles sell for over 800 dollars. Why not wait til after Christmas when there will be an almost certain price drop to enjoy what this Xbox Live pack has to offer?

Ticket to Ride Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I'll write first about the board game that is the basis for this Xbox 360 game. See my last paragraph for info about how well it made the transition to a video game format.
Ticket to Ride itself is a very good board game. It's one of the new flock of board games coming from Europe. It's also one of the lightest and easiest to learn railroad-themed board games ever made. Consequently, it's very fun for a wide variety of players, and very approachable by casual game players. However, veteran board game players or fans of the old grease-pencil rail games may find it a bit too light and lacking strategic complexity, which is why I've bumped it down to 4 stars.
Gameplay is very straightforward and can be learned in minutes. Each player starts with a set of hidden goals to connect various pairs of remote cities. Connecting the secret cities gives you a bonus depending on the difficulty; failing reduces your score by the amount of the bonus. (You also get points for connecting any cities at all, but you won't win without focusing on your bonuses.) Your main actions consist of accumulating train cards then spending them to lay down track connecting adjacent cities. Unlike grease-pencil rail games, connection opportunities between cities are a fixed feature of the map and thus a limited commodity. Connections have a specific length and color; players must obtain the right number of train cards of the right color in order to claim the connection, and once claimed, no other player can use that connection.
That's about it, but it's enough to make an exciting board game for 2-5 players. Your plans to connect your secret cities may be thwarted by another player seeking to use some of the same routes to connect his/her secret cities. Skilled players will learn to recognize critical connections and claim them early while working around blockages in less critical areas.
The Xbox 360 version of this board game is very well done. As you might expect, it removes all the tedium of the game. There wasn't much tedium to begin with, but you no longer need to setup the board or clean up afterwards, or hunt for cities you don't recognize, etc.. Also, the Xbox 360 adds some great graphics and sound effects. Every now and again, you'll see a balloon float by or a ship sail by on the map -- nice touches. You can also zoom in to get a closer view of a tangled set of connections or zoom out to see the board as a whole. And, of course, the game provides solid AI opponents of varying skill, so you can play with any combination of human and computer players, both locally and remotely. Your train cards are supposed to be a secret from other players, but the game plays just fine even if all local players see each other's cards, as players tend to focus on their own connections and train color needs rather than on blocking opponents. You get all of this, plus Xbox Live achievements, plus a tutorial to help you learn the game easily, and all for less than the cost of the actual board game. Board games are a great social activity, and they don't always translate well into video games, but the Xbox 360 version of Ticket to Ride is superior to the original board game in my opinion. The only drawback of the Xbox 360 version is that there isn't sufficient contrast between red and orange, which can sometimes lead you astray. (It makes you wonder how difficult it would be for a color blind person to play this game, either the board game or the video game.)
Now if they'd only port Iron Dragon to the Xbox 360...

Psyclone Gamer Kit for Xbox 360 Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I had high hopes for this and I wasn't disappointed...too much. The recharge kit and battery work, but battery life is much shorter than my official Microsoft battery. The charge kit does not fit quite as snug as the official one either, but it still manages to charge correctly.
The HDMI cable works great and would recommend it for anyone with a HDMI port on their TV. It made quite a difference from the HD cable to the HDMI one. I haven't used the remote yet, but I do not forsee any problems. I turned on and off my 'box with it.
Now to the cooling unit. I have a 360 pro made in September 2008 and the cooling unit does not fit it. The unit goes on, but does not allow the power cable to plug into it. I sent it to the supplier for a replacement about two weeks ago and we will see how that goes. Unless I post otherwise, we will assume it worked. The supplier acknowledged a problem and volunteered to replace it.
Overall, I got what I paid for. It is nothing spectacular but it does the job.

Xbox 360 Live Subscription Gold Card Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)To start off, I'd like to say that XBox Live is amazing and worth every penny. Online gaming is incredibly fun and a quite good way to pass time.
That aside, there are downsides to XBox Live that can be avoided through prepaid cards. Number one, you always run the risk that unwarranted transactions will be made if your credit card information is stored on your XBox 360 system. It may not happen all that often, but it's best to avoid it all together.
The biggest reason to buy prepaid Xbox Live card is the renewal process that happens when you don't use one. If you order XBox Live through your system, it'll renew everytime your subscription runs out. This wouldn't be a problem except that it's not that easy to cancel. Instead of canceling through your system, you have to go through the hassle of actually calling XBox Live support. Even then, depending on the representative you get, you may be hassled to keep your subscription because they really don't want you to cancel it. I'm guessing that's part of their job to convince you to keep it, but it still is frustrating to the person that is trying to cancel it.
You'll have to go through this process every time you want to cancel if you don't use a prepaid card. Is that hassle really worth it? I don't think so. Therefore, avoid all of the problems by simply buying a prepaid card. You won't be sorry.

UPDATE: (3/6/2011): I updated this review about a year ago pointing out that you could disable the subscription on X-Box Live's website. As of this update, they've taken that feature away again. I'm guessing Microsoft must have seen a major increase on people who canceled their subscription, thus now forcing you to call their customer service hot-line again to cancel. Even if they add it back, just save yourself the hassle and get a prepaid card. You never have to worry about dealing with customer service that will try their hardest to get you to stay on as a recurring customer. Amazon also gives great deals throughout the year. You could save yourself $20 to $30 sometimes just by checking to see if Amazon has these prepaid cards on sell. What's not to love about that?

Xbox 360 Live 12 Month Messenger Gold Pack Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This is an exceptional value.
I recently purchased an XBOX 360 Arcade, and I got into XBOX Live with the free month of Gold. I loved it so much I began looking around for some good deals on Live 12 month Gold cards on Amazon. I stumbled across this bundle, and decided that for only $8.99 more than buying a year of Live Gold directly through my 360 - I'd give this a shot because of all of the great extras.
Let me run down the items included and what I think of them:
12 Month Gold Subscription Card:
This is not a 12 Month + 1 free card like the other sold on Amazon - this is strictly 12 months, which is fine by me, I got my first month free of charge just for signing up.
XBOX 360 Live Chat Pad:
This device clips on seamlessly to your XBOX 360 controller, and sits in a position that is very convenient and accessible to use. It is back lit, and works very well for typing messages, or communicating with MSN Messenger contacts if you are using XBOX Live Gold on your 360. It even has a shortcut button to pull up your messenger contacts so you can start chatting right away. The buttons have a nice tactile 'click' to them, but they're not too firm. The device also has a headset connector port on the bottom for use with the included XBOX 360 communicator headset. (NOTE: this chat pad headset port will not work with the original launch model communicator headsets that had the mute and volume controls on the connector).
XBOX 360 Communicator Headset:
I have no issues at all with this headset. I also have a launch model one without the inline volume control and mute switch that this newer model has, and I have to say I much prefer this newer model. Not only does it have a better appearance without the bulky connector, I like the ability to clip the controls to your shirt, and I also hear a notably higher volume level that is available on this model compared to the the launch model headset I also have. It's much easier to hear my friends on Live with this headset.
Project Gotham Racing 4:
For a free pack in, this game is excellent. The graphics aren't the most outstanding on 360, but they are very well done. It's a fun game to play with friends, and even a good experience as a single player title. I found it to be yet another great reason to choose this bundle over buying just a 12 month gold subscription. This edition comes in a normal green 360 package, not the silver/gray platinum hits packaging.
NOTE:
This package also (at the time I purchased it) includes a Netflix trial subscription so you can stream movies to your 360 using your Gold account.
Closing comment:
For only $8.99 more than just buying a 12 Month Gold subscription, you're getting PRG4 (a $19 value), a Chat pad ($24 value), a Live Communicator headset ($19 value), and a free netflix trial. If you haven't got these items already and you need a year of live - this deal is hard to beat.
