(More customer reviews)If you are a big-time college basketball fan like myself, getting this game is a no-brainer. Sure, 2K Sports pushed the release date back almost two months from it's original release date. And sure, the game came out about a week before Selection Sunday and the NCAA Tournament festivities. But despite those facts, this game delivers in more ways than one. The graphics look great, and no, the players don't look exactly as they do in real life. But, this is a college game, not an NBA game, and it would take loads of time to perfect that.
The game contains all the normal modes that 2K Sports has had in the last several years. You can simply go right into a game from the main menu and choose your favorite team to play with. All Division I teams are included in the game which gives a wide variety of teams to choose from. It also contains classic teams from the past which are always fun if you want to change things up a little bit. The Pontiac Tournament Mode is also included where you can play through a tournament without first playing the regular season. The brackets are also customizable which gives you the power to set-up the matchups of your choice.
In my opinion, the greatest mode on the game is of course the Legacy Mode. 2K has made some great improvements to this mode involving recruiting. You can begin recruiting players as early as their freshman year in high school which makes for an absolutely great experience while recruiting. In the Legacy Mode, you can simply participate in an Open Legacy where you can choose any team of your choice, or you can participate in a Career Legacy. In the Career Legacy, you begin at the bottom of the coaching ladder and choose a team from the lower level of Division I Basketball. There are many teams to choose from which is also a plus. Playing through a season can be filled with ups and downs, just like a regular season in college basketball. This is very realistic, even more so than it has been in the past.
Perhaps a noticable change in this year's version is offensively. Unlike past versions, you now can have the option of using 8 plays while playing the game. In the past, you could only call four during the game. Also it seems 2K has emphasized the true college game which makes offense much more difficult. You must pass the ball and look for open shots in order to succeed in each game. While some people who love to play an up-tempo style make look at this as a negative, you can still run up and down the floor but it isn't a dunkfest all the time.
While many people compare this game to NBA 2K6, college fans will enjoy this more than it's NBA counterpart. If you love college basketball, don't let the late release date prevent you from buying this game. It is worth the $59.99 even if it is towards the end of the season.

NBA 2K8 Review

(More customer reviews)NBA 2K7 was arguably the greatest basketball game ever created. The gameplay was simply no match for NBA Live's gameplay, which was downright horrible. Well, just when I though 2K Sports couldn't make a better basketball game than last years, this game came out. One of the big problems with NBA 2K7 was the graphics. A lot of the players didn't really resemble their real life counterpart. Well, that is no longer the case. 2K8's graphics are the best I've seen yet, and all the players look so realistic that you actually believe that you're out there with them sweating on the court.
Of course, graphics aren't everything, right? Well, 2K8 has even better gameplay than last years. The shot stick still rocks the house, but there are also a lot of new additions to each game you play. After each game, you can watch the top three plays of the game. But that's not the coolest part. After each game, you can watch a highlight real of any player during the game. If you're playing as Kobe Bryant and you score 50 points against your opponent, then after the game you can watch each amazing play made by Kobe during the game. Sweet, right?
Well, this game also has a very fun and very realistic Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. This should keep you busy for hours, and it isn't even a part of the main game. If you're not good a dunking, there is a dunk school that can teach you how to emulate LeBron on his jams. There is also a really cool 3-Point Shootout.
So, if you're debating whether or not you should go with the hoops king 2K8, or try NBA Live 08, then I would HIGHLY suggest you get 2K8. Even though Live 08 is greatly improved upon, it still has a ways to go to catch up with 2K Sports and their basketball genius.

Quake 4 Review

(More customer reviews)Quake has a long, infamous history as a hard-hitting first person shooter that is not afraid of gore. With the XBox 360, Quake truly steps up its attention to detail.
This classic game has been around for eons. I remember the old days of Doom and Hexen - and wow, have we come far since then! We now see a very cinematic version of the FPS epic series, with cinematic style intro sequences reminiscent of Alien and other great sci-fi series.
You're in essence a space marine, part of the Rhino group. Your team is shot down from the sky while landing on a hostile planet, taking out the Strogg. From that point forward, all you need to know is that you have to blow up pretty much everything that moves.
I'm sure, with the never-ending sequence of sequels that come out, that people will compare this to old versions of Doom and Quake. They'll also compare it to Halo. Really, unless you want to play with old-system games for years on end, you have to find other things to play. I love Halo and Halo 2. But eventually I want to play new games, if only to try out new maps.
Quake has a whole different look-and-feel than Halo does. It's a different universe, a dark, bloody one full of industrial grunge. It's more "gritty". And, to be honest, as much as I love Halo, I really appreciated the marines in Quake 4. They appeared to actually work as a team. My medic and techie hung out near me, healing me and giving me support. In Halo it seemed like your teammates were the traditional "red uniformed security dudes" from Star Trek - only around to act as cannon fodder during the current episode. In Quake 4, they were much more long lasting, if you played things well.
Is this a killer app? Probably not. The graphics are rather impressive on the HD TV - but for example the sky is static. Pretty, but static. The textures down in the mines are detailed, bloody, grungy and very dark - but it gets repetitive. The gameplay is simply blasting, blasting more, blasting more and some dodging. The sound is a stream of bullet blasts.
But that being said, that is all the Quake series has ever intended to be. It's a fun way to blow off steam. You have a hard day at work or school, and you come home to blast away enemies for a few hours. It's very stress-relieving. You feel like you make some progress, it's easy to save and pick up the story later on. No complex puzzles, no intricate stealth sequences. It's all about blasting away with great accuracy.
If you're a FPS shooter fan, it would seem silly to sit stationary and hold your breath until you turn blue, or until Halo 3 finally emerges. Buy Quake 3, have fun blasting away at dark-and-gloomy enemies, and tune your skills. Other games will be coming out eventually for you to get that eye candy you crave.

Outfit Review

(More customer reviews)The Outfit has you performing missions in World War II Europe. You're the Allies, out to stop a rogue German soldier who is causing trouble.
There are certainly a ton of WWII games out there on the market, and many of them are excellent. The Outfit doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. This isn't a dark, realistic, drama-filled game like some others. Instead it goes for a more cheezy, cartoon-colored version of WWII where you're having reinforcements drop immediately from the sky and are blowing things up.
Whether that's good or bad for you of course depends on your personality. I have to say I like the realistic games, but I also understand that every single game shouldn't be exactly the same. There should be room out there for different styles.
It's sort of an odd mix. On one hand the graphics are very nice - the detailed brickwork on the ground, the clouds drift in the blue sky, the mouth animation while people speak. On the other hand, it's like an Oz version of the world. The grass is a bit too green. The rocks are a bit too shiny. I expect a horde of little children to pop out from the shrubbery and start singing, "It's a small world after all!"
The sound ties in with the cheesy design. There aren't moody, realistic commentaries or orchestral music. Instead you get cliches like "They sure have big mosquitoes in this part of France" that you get to hear repeatedly.
There are interesting aspects to the game. You get to be one of three main characters, each with his own special strengths and weaknesses. If you die, you respawn at a checkpoint that you can choose and can rotate to another character. As your health fades, your vision goes to black and white. Your enemy slaying earns you money which you can spend to improve your situation. You can blow up buildings or just watch the blades of grass wave in the wind.
On the other hand, some things are odd here. Units don't reliably use cover. The ragdoll physics are sometimes good and sometimes extremely bizarre. Whoever chose the acronym "F-U" for Field Units wasn't thinking very clearly.
All in all, I would recommend people rent this one first. Give it a play for a few hours. It might be that this lighthearted take on wargaming really appeals to you! On the other hand, it might be that you really prefer serious wargaming and would rather justkeep playing Call of Duty 2. It's best to know which way you will go before you pay for a full version.
