Guitar Hero 2 Review

(More customer reviews)Some of the most fun I've had playing games in the last few years was going a couple of rounds of Guitar Hero with a few friends. It's a fantastic party game and if you've never played it, you owe it to yourself to check it out. This, much like SingStar and Dance Dance Revolution, is a title that's going to appeal highly to your "non-traditional" gamer crowd. I could, honestly, fawn over how much fun it is for hours, but there were a couple of things about the 360 version of this game that I wanted to bring up.
First, I know there are a ton of you out there that have a PS2 version of this already. If that's the case, I'm not sure there's enough added content out-of-the-box to warrant buying the game a second time. The only difference would be about ten added titles to the soundtrack. Now, mind you, they're all great songs; but is what amounts to a CD enough for you to plunk down another ninety bucks?
Unfortunately, two of the features I was really pulling for on the 360 version aren't making the final release. I was wildly excited over getting a wireless guitar, but there was some kind of licensing hang-up with Microsoft over the use of their wireless technology. Red Octane has said that they're hopeful they'll eventually release a wireless guitar, but they couldn't get past the red tape fast enough. I'm a bit bummed, but, to Red Octane's credit, the wired guitar they included is really cool looking.
Secondly, I'm also a bit disappointed that there isn't an online multi-player competition. I thought it would have been awesome to have head-to-head rock-offs. I don't know if this is something they could work in later, but Microsoft's online play is so well done and so much fun that I'm always a little let-down when developers don't take advantage of it. It wound up being the only issue I dinged the game a star for. If that was included, this may have been as close to perfect as I could have hoped for.
The graphics for this aren't staggeringly better then the PS2 version, but on the other hand, they don't really need to be either. It's considered a high-definition game, but honestly, you'll probably only notice a small difference. In a game like this, you're looking at the play-ability. As long as the graphics aren't a distraction, that should be enough. The game play here is as addictive as any you'll ever hope to find.
The Co-op play with the bass-guitar mode is a lot of fun and a cool feature. I'm also really looking forward to seeing what song downloads end up being available on xBox marketplace. Jury's still out until we see the content, but that's a pretty cool feature that'll keep this game fresh for a long time.
As I mentioned before, if you're an xBox lifer, who's never had the chance to check out this former PS2 exculsive, you owe it to yourself to pick this up. If you already have the PS2 version, however, you'll be just as content to rock out with that for now.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Review

(More customer reviews)Guitar Hero 3 (GH3) is the fourth iteration in this series of games despite it being labeled the third, though for most people the 80s edition that was the actual third game was a bit of a footnote since it only came out on PS2 and had very little in it that differed from Guitar Hero 2 other than the songs.
GH3 continues with the same basic formula as the previous games which will keep fans of the series happy, but at the same time adds some welcome new features. One of the best additions is that of online play so that you can now do co-op, face-off, pro face-off and battle mode with a friend over the Live network.
The battle mode is a change up from the normal face-off modes in that instead of gaining star power you acquire attacks from playing certain sequences of notes. Then when you turn the guitar up as if you were going to use star power it instead launches an attack at your opponent. The attacks vary in their nastiness and while I was skeptical of this new aspect of the game it's actually a nice twist for those more competitive players.
Another addition is the co-op career mode, but unfortunately you can't play this mode online which means you'll have to get a friend over with their guitar to experience this mode.
Speaking of the guitar the new wireless Gibson Les Paul style guitar controller is a welcome change from the original 360 GH2 controller. Overall it just feels a lot more solid, especially the whammy bar. Not being wired makes a big difference in terms of convenience. There are GH3 bundles out there with the original GH2 controller in them and I would recommend passing on those in favor of the wireless bundle.
The career mode remains mostly the same as in the previous games. There are now little animated vignettes between each set that don't add much to the overall experience, but certainly are a welcome change from the old bus driving across the country scenes in the previous games. The other addition to career mode is that at the end of certain sets you have to enter battle mode with another guitarist. By now most people know that Tom Morello and Slash are the two real guitarists who you battle against in the game. Both contributed original guitar compositions for their battle sections and can be unlocked as avatars in the game.
The playing experience itself is much the same, though it seems the game is even more forgiving in the timing of when you play notes than even GH2 was and hammer-ons and pull-offs are also very easy to do. For experienced players this will obviously make the game easier in some respects, but at the same time the note structure has been mixed up a bit and the later songs are pretty challenging on Hard and Expert.
While the multiplayer aspect adds a lot more playability to the game at the same time the core of the experience remains the songs and for this game there are even more original songs than before and the song list is pretty great.
Overall GH3 rocks the house in much the same way as the previous games, but with the addition of some new features it doesn't feel like more of the same. Multiplayer adds a new aspect that should give the game a lot more life overall between those times when you get your friends over to the house.

(More customer reviews)This is the second guitar to come packaged with a Guitar Hero game on Xbox 360. This product is guitar only; click the bundle option if you need to buy Guitar Hero III as well. Buy this to get another copy of the best--for playing purposes--guitar on the Xbox 360.
This guitar is great and works on both GH II/III as well as on Rock Band. The strum is reliable, though loud, and the frets are responsive. Other nice features are that it is black, can be customized with faceplates, and is wireless. Two AA batteries last a good while, maybe 20-40 hours.
The sole downside is that the edge of the guitar where your lower arm may rest is not really comfortable, so your skin may feel a bit chafed after extended play. Still recommended over anything else, especially that Rock Band guitar, which doesn't even work on Guitar Hero.

Guitar Hero Aerosmith Review

I'm not, so I rented the game and enjoyed it enough to give it 3-stars. It's essentially the same game (with same tutorial) as Guitar Hero 3. The key differences are: 1) the song selection is much shorter, 2) the song difficulty is much easier...maybe Joe Perry's not the axe-master I always thought he was.
The graphics are fun, they got Steven Tyler's mouth and wardrobe changes down perfectly. During load time there's interviews with the entire band that gives some fun insights into the progression of their career. However, I was shocked that some key Aerosmith hits like "Angel", "Dude Looks Like a Lady", "Janie's Got a Gun", and "Don't Want to Miss a Thing" weren't on the play list. I know some people might comment that they're ballads or too slow and easy to play. Who cares! I'd rather have some easy songs and have the full run of Aerosmith hits than to have 40 songs in total (especially for those paying $60). When you make a game based on a rock group...give us as much of their collection as possible! The game should at least cover the "greatest hits".
A minor annoyance with the entire GH series is dealing with the achievements on the Xbox 360. In Guitar Hero 3 a majority of the achievements are so impossibly hard to get you'd need to be Yngwie Malmsteen to even come close. However, in GH:A I managed to unlock 5 all on one song (when I wasn't even trying). Not sure if the game makers are treating achievements like a joke or what, but I know many gamers use these as a goal to work towards. So for future games it would be nice if some form of balance can be struck and an achievement can manage to be both challenging and obtainable all at the same time.
I still want to give props to the GH franchise for doing a band-centric game. Heck, any game that opens with Cheap Trick's "Dream Police" can't be bad! Hopefully the Young Brothers will open up the AC/DC catalog for a future version. Actually, I'm surprised that the money-making franchise formerly known as "Gene Simmons" doesn't already have a KISS game in the pipes.
Oh well, if you're jonesing for some guitar playing fun then GH:A should keep you entertained for at least 3-7 days. But a full purchase is probably not necessary.
