Ikaruga Review

Ikaruga

I've always wanted this game (for multiple consoles), so I was thrilled when it came my way to the Xbox so I could finally get it. You can have a lot of fun with this game, that is for sure, but you can also get very frustrated. Now that I mentioned it was frustrating, let me mention a few tips about the game to help ease the frustation (no spoilers).
This game keeps track of how much time you've spent playing it, so after you play it for one hour total, you get more continues or lives, after two hours you get some more etc.. So the longer you play, the more lives/continues you get so you can actually get further in the game and eventually beat it. (recommend Easy mode for first timers)
The other tip is, you have to learn the patterns of the enemies and get as many chains as you can for the most points. Kill three white enemies, 1 chain.. kill another three, 2 chain and so on. If you kill two white, then one black, the chain is broken. You can kill 3 white, 3 black, 3 white etc. to keep the chain going, just don't interrupt the intervals of 3 and you'll be fine. Sounds easy right? ;) Check out some youtube videos of the game and you'll see what I mean.
The achievements have a few easy ones, but the rest are just plain hard and require a LOT of practice. I managed to get 95/200 points, and I am very proud.
The graphics are also very cool and I just love the look of this game. Very fun, try the demo, just be patient and you will be rewarded!

Lost Planet Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition Review

Lost Planet Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition
Average Reviews:

My son recently purchased an Xbox and this game. He enjoys this game a lot. Please note that this is an expansion pack game and will not be enjoyed by those that already have the original Lost Planet Extreme Condition game. The bad reviews are due to the disappointment of gamers seeking a new and different game. If you do not currently have the original Lost Planet game, you will most likely enjoy this one.

Culdcept Saga Review

I got a copy of Culdcept and can not put it down. The game is a mixture of board games and trading card games. I never really liked trading card games as a kid, but for some reason the concept really grows on me here. I have played about 4 hours so far, including some multiplayer. The game, simply put, rocks. It combines all the luck of rolling a die with the strategy of building a deck of cards. I am totally hooked. I hope the graphics would be better since its a 360 game, but for my $40, the game is worth every penny.

Fight Night Round 3 Review

Fight Night Round 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've browsed the previous reviews, and agree with most that's been said. This *is* the best of the series. The graphics are ridiculously good. The control is terrific. For once, you really have a feel for how the fight is going, rather than relying upon health and stamina bars that just (in this reviewer's opinion) take away from the realism -- although they are an option. On the hardest difficulty, the game is absolutely a challenge, at least once your career really gets underway. You will be knocked down, you may even lose some fights, this wasn't necessarily the case in previous versions. Creating faces on character generation is much smoother and more intuitive now. The sound is fantastic. The ring girl's breasts actually jiggle when they strut around the ring between rounds.
Everything is great, really, it's a terrific addition to your XB360 library. Online is fun, there are ranked and non- matches, it's fast and easy to get a fight, another outstanding aspect to the game that will dramatically increase its longevity.
Great! So we got all that aside, I can talk about the commercials.
I've never seen a more over-the-top case of commercialism in the game. Is this a complaint? Yes and no. I mean, watch basically any boxing match, there are going to be ads on the ring canvas, on the ropes, in the arena, even on the shorts of some of the boxers. So there's just some realism here. Does it go overboard though? Yes, I'm absolutely prepared to say it does. Before some fights, you'll be 'treated' to a 360 degree view of a new Dodge truck while the announcer tells you about it. That doesn't seem too bad, right? Okay, later, Burger King's "The King" will escort another fighter into the ring and dance around before the fight. No, that doesn't get your goat either? How about after that fight, when "The King" actually becomes one of your available trainers? That's right, you too can be trained by, and have in your corner, a creepy guy with a giant plastic grinning mask.
Look, I'm not one of those types that goes off the deep-end about stuff like this -- but EA, are you listening? If you're going to throw it in our faces like this, while lining your already deep pockets with the ad revenue that you get from these placements, how about giving us a break on the cost of the game? We're paying for it, the advertisers are paying for it, wouldn't it seem fair to throw the consumers you're force feeding ad content a bone? Here's the thing, it doesn't have to be a big bone, and it gives us less reason to feel as used and abused as many of us are when the suspension of disbelief within a game/simulation like this is *shattered* by having to train with "The King". In fact, then we can cheer the gross commercialism, because we got something out of it too, a few bucks saved.
Terrific game. Worth buying, not just renting. 5 stars for the game, 1 off for taking advantage of me as a fan and customer. I should really ding it harder for that, but the game is too fun to let something sort of sleazy take away from it.

Geometry Wars Evolved2 Review

Geometry Wars Evolved2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't normally go for action games or games that require fast reflexes. My favorite genres tend to be adventure, puzzle, or strategy. But once in a while, a good shooter can really fit the bill. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 (GW2 for short) is a best of breed shooter that will appeal to experienced gamers whether or not they tend to like shooters. (I don't, however, recommend it for grandma who has never touched a video game.)
GW2 uses eye-popping, high-contrast graphics that pay homage to the likes of Asteroids and other 80s coin-op video games. Explosions and other visual flourishes are plentiful and brilliantly colorful. The normal audio is a pulsing techno soundtrack which fits perfectly. The combined effect is sheer intensity.
GW2 has no campaign mode, but does have 6 different modes of play, all of which are suitable for single-player, multi-player co-op, and multi-player competition. The modes are different enough to offer a good variety of experiences to the player. For example, in one mode, you have infinite lives and simply must rack up the highest score in 3 minutes, which is a great way for newcomers to learn the controls and enemies. In another mode, players face a fixed (non-random) set of steadily increasing challenges, which will appeal to players interested in optimizing their attack patterns. For the hardcore player, there is an extremely punishing mode that involves wave after wave of near death experiences. My personal favorite mode (which also seems to be the most popular mode online) is Pacifism, in which you cannot shoot at all, but must instead manipulate the enemies and lure them to their deaths via skillful piloting. Words fail me to describe how addictive Pacifism mode is, but if you enjoy this game at all, you'll likely be playing Pacifism mode for months. [UPDATE: I've been playing this for over a year now and still come back to it regularly!]
The variety of modes makes this game something you'll want to play longer than most other shooters, but the longevity is boosted further by its multiplayer capabilities. GW2 has excellent built-in leaderboard support; upon launching the game, you immediately see where you stand relative to your Xbox Live friends -- and if your scores are close, it can really kick in your competitive streak and push you to achieve new heights. (Leaderboards may require Xbox Live Gold membership.) But more importantly, GW2 features excellent local multiplayer. If you and 3 buddies are at one location sharing 1 Xbox 360, this is one of the best party games available on the platform to date. You can play co-operatively or competitively, free-for-all or in teams. In none of the multiplayer modes do you ever shoot one another directly; instead, when you want to compete, you do so by killing more enemy ships or picking up more powerups and getting a higher score. As you and your friends transition between game modes, the game will automatically retain a running total score for each player for the session, unless you want to reset it.
GW2 is not my favorite game, and it doesn't have a lot of depth. But it's a solid, intense shooter with staying power. It works well in sessions of 5 minutes or 5 hours, and I have consistently returned to it again and again for the past 6 months, both to show off the Xbox 360 platform to friends and just to play and re-play the awesome modes. (I was finally able to master the last achievement, meaning, the achievements are well-balanced stretch goals for players who are not experts at shooter-type games.) It's also one of my favorite party games for the Xbox 360. Shooter fans will love it, and fans of other genres will find it a good counterpoint to their normal fare. GW2 definitely earns the 5 stars and is definitely worth the money.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Review

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You know, it's amazing that in this day and age, you can have a game with spectacular graphics and unbelievable surround sound and the game is just.... blah.
I mean, graphically Lost Planet is pretty nice. Beautiful, actually. There are some boss battles that are pretty astounding in how they are presented. There's one moment at the very beginning where a creature named Green Eye appears and the size of this thing is enough to make your jaw drop. There's also another moment when you're running across an open field getting chased by this monstrous worm thing that is an experience on its own. This is definitely a game that benefits from being played on an HDTV setup with surround sound.

But then the story kicks in and you can't deny that it makes very little sense, not to mention the fact that the hero of the story is really not an interesting character to begin with. The gameplay itself is a bit repetitive and really, the game just amounts to little more than eye and ear candy. Even when you're not on foot and riding around in the mechs, it just doesn't add up to any memorable experience.
The online portion of the game isn't enough to make you want to play it a lot, especially with games like Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas out there. It's kind of stale and just not that interesting.
I'm really down the middle on this game. I'd say that it's worth a rental and then if you like it, get it. I wouldn't call this an outright purchase as it just didn't grab me the way I would've expected it to.
