The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon Review

The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the third Spyro game in the "Legend of Spyro" series. This is also the first game in which Spyro can actually fly and is the first game made for the XBOX 360 and PS3 generation of consoles.
The original Spyro games, that came out for the Playstation One, were highly rated. Moreso than the more recent "Legend of" series.
That being said, I think this game delivers in providing some really cool, great looking next-gen environments along with, for the most part, the kind of quality gameplay that satisfies.
Graphically the strengths are that the environment and ambient surroundings are among the best I've seen for a game that is intended to be charming for both kids and adults. The weaknesses are that the camera angles get very restricted and the frame rate drops and gets choppy at times. Both Spyro and Cynder, along with the environments, look great in this game. Just as you'd expect on the 360.
Gameplay-wise I have to say the God of War like boss battles are very enjoyable and work well. Battling the typical onslought of enemies can get repetitious as they come out in large numbers at times and respawn over and over. Though you'll probably find yourself button mashing the x and y buttons to continually attack in these instances, there are some nice grabs and combo moves that you can do that help to break up the monotony of it. Each dragon has specific breath attacks, such as fire, ice, electricity ...etc, that can be upgraded to be more powerful throughout the game. Armor can be obtained and upgraded as well.
The co-op play works well. All you have to do is pause the game and you can choose "Single Player" or "Two Player" from the menu at any time and a friend can join in. Both Spyro and Cynder are joined together by what appears to be an electro-magnetic tether that keeps them within a close range of each other. This means in co-op mode the two players have to work together to try and basically move in the same direction throughout the gameplay.
The flying is sweet and I really enjoy it with only the downside being that it is limited by barriers. Tap the "A" button three times and you're in the air, any time at any place in the game. However, you usually have to get a long flying run, or have to go through a predefined route, in order to get to higher locations that Spyro can't immediately ascend to. If you're like me, you'll enjoy flying through the awesome environments at times.
The story plays out in a kind of superficial way. It is decent enough to carry the game but not quite up to par with the epic soundtrack and background music. The audio is top notch and the voicework is well acted. Background ambient music is movie-like and helps this to truly feel like a game for this generation.
Aside from the frustrations of limited camera angles, invisible barriers and repetitious fighting of common enemies, I think this game is great and I am glad I bought it :)

Bakugan Battle Brawlers Review

Bakugan Battle Brawlers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I did enjoy the time I gave Bakugan, in all honesty it may not be a game you'll be coming back to ever again after completion. To begin with, the first series of battles are laughably easy, and although it does raise in difficulkty later, this may turn off someone just starting. The game's main objective is, of course, to win the story mode and eventually own all the different Bakugan and cards, which is quite the trial. Doing so took me almost 20 hours total. The only thing left to do is play versus up to 4 players, which is local only and severely limited since you can't choose what deck you want to use when selecting one of the unlocked characters. All in all, try before you buy.

Story The story of Bakugan: Battle Brawlers revolves around a set of metallic cards that mysteriously fall from space. On finding them, kids from around the planet discover that the cards also provide access to a variety of monsters that can be pitted against each other and so develop a game based on the cards and monsters and set up tournaments. One group of these kids, who name themselves the "Bakugan Battle Brawlers" and who are led by Dan, find that the cards also serve as a link to a parallel dimension known as Vestroia. Here they discover that the game and its monsters that they are dedicated to mastering is tied to an imbalance of positive and negative energy in Vestroia. This imbalance must be corrected to avoid unspeakable consequences for Vestroia, and since a link has been made to the Earth, eventually the kids' home as well. Gameplay Those who have played the popular Bakugan card game might alreadyhave an idea of how gameplay works in Bakugan: Battle Brawlers, but the video game adds several new elements. The game is somethingof a cross between marbles and a live action card game. To get startedyou'll first need to enter your name, select an attribute and createyour character. Then you'll be ready to explore the world of Bakugan. If you can't wait to start battling your friends, then head straightto the Battle Arena, but if you want to be the best you have to learnthe rules. The goal of Bakugan: Battle Brawlers is to win thegame by collecting three "gate cards." Gate cards are collected bywinning battles against opponents. As a starting move each playersets down one metallic gate card. Then you're ready to roll your Bakugan, which is in the form of a ball. After throwing you can steer yourBakugan around the environment so that it lands on the perfect cardand collects powerups. The aim is to get your Bakugan to stand ona card, and that happens when they roll over it slowly. Once the Bakuganstands, it will transform into Battle Mode. Now you're ready to battle.A battle begins when two Bakugan from different players stand on thesame gate card. The gate card then opens and both bakugan transforminto Monster Mode, and are ready to fight. The gate card can add "G-Power"to a Bakugan according to its world attribute (color) and can alsochange the rules of the battle. Players can also boost their G-powerby doing well in battle. The Bakugan with the highest G-power at theend of the battle wins. After battling, you can also use the points you have won to upgrade your Bakugan, acquire new in-game items, engage in Tag Team or Battle Royale action, or hone your skills by practicing your moves and strategy with Dan. Singularity Review

Singularity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game got little to no advertisements and has been delayed far too many times for people to care by this point.
That right there is what I expect most people to be thinking. Well good news! The game is actually great! The gunplay is excellent and the setting is actually pretty tense and creepy. I like the story so far myself but I see many don't care much for it. If you don't care for the story that should be fine because this is an excellent shooter that has many explosive moments and (so far) has been a thrill ride of fun and destruction. I'm so surprised about this game because I really did not intend on buying it. I read about it a long time ago and it seemed awesome but by the time I saw it being released it seemed very meh. Well luckily that isn't the case and I highly recommend this game.
As far as Multiplayer goes it is a mixed bag. I find it to be very fun but I can see it not exactly being the highlight that people would like. One team plays as humans and the other as Mutants. There are different classes for each side and they all have different abilities such as Healing, teleporting, puking, controlling the enemy team, and just plain strong. It is very different but quite a fun distraction if you take the time to try it. The only thing I've seen that seems annoying is that a lot of the games I've gotten into have been one sided. Either one side totally destroys and wins the game or the other. Not too often is it a tie or close game. There are also only two modes to play and they may not keep your attention too long. One other downside is I've noticed some lag in the games when in the larger (12 people) games. Not so bad because it doesn't always happen but it's noticeable and could be a turn-off.
So all-in-all I have been having an excellent time with this game that came out of nowhere and I recommend it if you've been craving a violent well-made FPS with some fun (if maybe not long-lasting) Multiplayer to boot. Definitely an excellent distraction while waiting for other great games. It's just sad it has gotten so little hype and attention because I can see this being a great series.

Story In the dark, Cold War winter of 1949-50 Stalin, the brutal leader of the Soviet Union, had two super weapons: long range missiles and the atomic bomb. But even if his teams of forced labor managed to build a missile powerful enough to carry an atomic payload, Stalin still faced encirclement by the United States and the Strategic Air Command. He knew that he needed another advantage over the United States, one that would ensure Soviet security and superiority. Then came the chance discovery on the remote island of Katorga-12 off the wild Kamchatka peninsula, of a previously unknown material, Element 99 (E99). E99 became the new source of Stalin's hope: a new energy source of unparalleled power. Unfortunately, the new element also yielded a new kind of contamination risk. But these were acceptable risks to Stalin - anything for the advancement of the Soviet people. Even so, on September 21, 1950, driven to complete the project, and in violation of the safety protocols, a Russian scientist, Viktor Barisov, personally triggered a device powered by E99 that caused a catastrophic event that affected the entire island. What happened next is unclear. However, there are reports that Stalin's final dying order was a handwritten scrawl to quarantine Katorga-12. And so the knowledge of the island remained buried...until 2010, when intelligence reports in the west confirm activity on a remote atoll in the Russian Federation's shadow. The world has no memory of Katorga-12. No concept of what may be on the island off the southeast coast of Russia. It is deemed that the world can't afford another Chernobyl - or worse. America's answer is to scramble a stealth flyby of the area. They need recon - and they need it now. Gameplay and Weapons Action in Singularity is a mix of combat mission gameplay and puzzle-solving. Combat is against both modern and 50s era Russian forces, as well enemies mutated through exposure to E99. In this players have their choice of conventional weapons including: pistols, shotguns, machine guns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, etc., as well as as few Sci-Fi weapons very specific to the game. These include the TMD (Time Manipulation Device) and the E99 pistol. The TMD is a gauntlet, which players acquire early in the game that can be integrated with conventional weapons. Its main function though relates it its ability to alter time within a small specific area. The major examples of this are: Reversion - The ability to alter encounters by rewinding the history of an item or entity to the time of your choosing. This can be used to repair broken items, render enemies harmlessly embryonic, etc. Aging - The ability to alter encounters by fast-forwarding the history of objects or entities, rendering the former rusted and worn and the latter decrepit with age or simply dust. Stasis - The ability to freeze time and thus dangerous situations in order to gain an advantage. Impulse - The ability to propel objects frozen in time in a targeted direction. Chronolite - Functionality that allows the player to look back to a time associated with a place, person or object.
Players can also utilize the TMD in conjunction with the E99 pistol, a gun that shoots bullets infused with Element 99, to hit targets unreachable due to distance and otherwise indestructible cover. In addition, to the TMD's combat uses, it is also indispensable as a tool for solving the spatial-oriented and other types of puzzles that players will face on the island of Katorga-12. Multiplayer Singularity contains multiplayer gameplay options, that just as in its single player campaign, integrate conventional combat tactics and weapons with the time manipulation elements. Key Features
An engrossing storyline blending Cold War history and science fiction elements.
An arsenal of first-person weapons, including conventional firearms and upgradeable, time altering gadgets.
Mission progressing puzzle-solving gameplay.
Advanced graphics built on the Unreal 3 game engine.
Multiplayer gameplay options.
Xbox LIVE support including LIVE Achievements.

Monster Jam Review

Monster Jam
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Monster Jam would have been a better game had it stuck with just being a good arcade-style racer. It has lots of varied tracks, each with lots of interest: destructible elements, wacky stunt jump points, hidden shortcuts, etc. When you're in a full-field race against other monster trucks, the racing is a lot of fun. You'll be bouncing off of other trucks, flying through the air, and crashing through every imaginable object (buildings, boats, parked airplanes, and even the space shuttle!) from the initial green light. Computer AI is pretty slow, so you'll have every opportunity to enjoy your fill of mayhem and then still use some hidden shortcuts to catch back up again. I once won a race flipped upside down riding on the hood of another truck. This amount of unpredictability gives it a decent replay value as an arcade racer; however, it also doesn't distinguish itself from any of the other titles that do the same (and do it better, e.g. the Burnout series).
So the developers tried to pump up the monster truck feel by adding game modes that mimic actual Monster Jam events (I'm guessing - I swear that I've never attended or even seen one of these things!). Unfortunately, this half of the game is where it falls really short. The freestyle events, where you must perform tricks like crushing cars, jumping buses and popping wheelies before an arena audience, are a real chore. The trick is to maximize the judges' scores by stringing together tricks one right after the other. Easier said than done. And the scores seem very arbitrary - you may think that you did pretty well and then you get a low score but also no real feedback on why. So, you don't really ever know how to do any better and these events become sticking points in the career championship mode. There is also a one-on-one stadium racing mode where you and another truck race for the best time through an obstacle course on the arena floor. Unfortunately, the course design is atrocious and oftentimes you get lost among all of the barrels, barricades and flags while your flawless opponent zips through. This mode would benefit greatly from an overhead map of the course in the corner of the heads-up, but there is none.
Finally, there is no online multiplayer capability or any Xbox Live support at all. In 2008, this is simply unacceptable for any game. PROS
* Well-designed race courses with lots of destructible elements and hidden shortcuts
* Easily-reachable achievements if that's your thing
CONS
* Freestyle and stadium events are the least enjoyable parts of the game
* No online multiplayer or XBL support at all
* Announcer voice acting is annoying after a very short time

DJ Hero Bundle with Turntable Review

DJ Hero Bundle with Turntable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is a ton of fun to play. You will definitely need to play the tutorial levels before jumping in as there are many things requiring your attention all at once, but once you get the gist, the gameplay and music will keep you coming back for more. I have a few minor issues with the renegade edition. First,I was under the impression that the point of this version was to have additional playable tracks provided by Jay-Z and Eminem. That is not the case. The two disc set you receive with this edition are music CDs of tracks from both artists. That's great and all, but I already have all of the music (except the one exclusive Eminem track) from other CDs so this is not really a selling point for me. The case in which everything comes packed is a welcome addition as I'm not sure where I would store one more peripheral in my living room. However, once I attached the legs to make the case into a DJ stand which seems like a nice feature, I found that at my height, on carpet, the stand is a bit wobbly, which makes it more difficult to effectively scratch during the game. When I placed the turntable controller on the coffee table and played from there, the game is much easier to play. My last gripe is that there are (so far) no unedited tracks. This is the perfect medium for an M rating to allow the adult players to hear profanity and suggestive content if they so choose. In fact, that two-disc set that came with this version as a bonus has the parental warning and is indeed unedited. Over all a great game, and if you have the Jay-Z and Em songs and don't have a storage issue, I'd say save your money and skip the Renegade edition in favor of the regular version. I must say that I have not actually used the non-renegade turntable controller though so I can't vouch for its feel (the Renegade version feels heavy and solid).
GO DJ!

Music and Gaming Via a Revolutionary Controller Like the music that inspired it, DJ Hero allows players to experience music in a new revolutionary way through through its game-specific controller. Included with the DJ Hero software, the DJ Hero controller is a combination turntable and mixer that immerses you into authentic DJ culture allowing you to scratch, cross-fade, and beat match. The turntable half of the controller features three color-coated buttons used to direct action during gameplay and a realistically rotating turntable. The opposite end of the controller contains the mixer controls in the form of a lateral fader allowing for switching between tracks and mixing, a knob for additional effects and a button for capturing "euphoria," a star power-like point bonus. In addition, the mixer portion of the controller detaches to accommodate left-handed players and contains an out of the way compartment holding a D-pad and conventional controller buttons for easy console navigation. Taken together, both halves of the controller allow players to customize their mix with a variety of effects and samples transforming a face in the crowd into the life of the party. Gameplay Gameplay in DJ Hero is reminiscent to games in the Guitar Hero series. Musical prompts stream towards players on one of three color-coded ribbons; red and blue which correspond to the two tracks that the player is able to simultaneously or individually manipulate, as well as a red one between these two, used to insert samples. In addition to hitting individual notes and samples, players are also challenged to scratch on command by pressing the appropriate button for the track and sliding the turntable up or down as indicated on the ribbon. The game also provides players with a chance to turn back the clock on earlier action via its "Rewind" feature. This ability is monitored via the rewind meter that levels higher with successful play, and and when full allows the player to rewind the song to fix errors in their earlier performance. The reward for precision is the build up of points, which can be temporarily doubled via euphoria power with the push of a button on the mixer end of the controller. Rule the Hottest Parties In the tradition of Guitar Hero, which brought gamers into the world of rock 'n' roll, DJ Hero places players in the DJ booth at some of the hottest clubbing scenes from around the globe. Party in venues reminiscent of real world locales from around the globe including an ultra plush and sexy Hollywood Hills style mansion, to an open air beach club in Ibiza. Play Modes Although DJ Hero contains engrossing single player game options, including a career mode, much of the action in the game surrounds its wealth of multiplayer modes. These include both online and offline multiplayer competitive and cooperative modes: including DJ vs. DJ, DJ + DJ and DJ + Guitar. Set List The DJ Hero set list is constructed of 100 songs, crafted into more than 80 two-song DJ mixes. These mixes are the product of both the creative talents of internationally known DJs such as DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip, DJ AM and Daft Punk, and the game development team. All songs used are new to the Guitar Hero family of games and are pulled from a wide array of genres, including pop, grunge, soul, R&B, techno, hip hop, and house.

Guitar Hero 5 Review

Guitar Hero 5
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well I would just like to say, that the average rating of this game is 3 stars. I'm very stunned by that, because this is a good game. I'm going to do a list of pros and cons.
Pros:
+ Excellent graphics, the band on stage has never looked better, and some of the effects are awesome. You either hate them or love them.
+ The song selection is huge, the biggest out of all the guitar heroes, I was really surprised with all the venues they had in career.
+ Is the song selection good? Overall it's more good than bad which is nice, I wish there were some more songs that I knew on the game.
+ The game is fun to play, it's enjoyable, and not as frustrating as some of the other guitar heroes.
+ A lot of reviews, say playing your avatar in the game looks weird and just doesn't fit in. I disagree, it gave me a chance to really make my avatar look cool, sometimes I get sick of seeing the same game characters every guitar hero.
+ The Party Play is a nice feature, I know if I had party at my house, and tons of instruments I would definetely use this feature. It's also fun, if you're to lazy to find a song to play, or just want to relax.
+ Tons of replay value, going back to get the bonuses, or completed every song in career will take a while and keep you busy.
There's a few nuetral spots, that aren't bad at all, but annoy me in some way:
+/- Sympathy for the Devil is a fun song to play, but listening to "whoo, whoo," the whole song can get on your nerves.
+/- Making a logo, wasn't all that great, I found it to be more annoying than fun when making one, but I felt good when I got it done.
+/- I only knew about 3 of the songs when I played this, some of the other guitar heroes, atleast had 5-10 songs that I knew, but not a problem at all since most of the songs are quite enjoyable anyway.
And last but not least the negatives:
- This guitar hero didn't do much in progression, what I mean each guitar hero game has some significance in doing something new for the fans, this one didn't do that for me, still a fun game.
- The store is gone, instead of money you have to unlock the stuff, and some stuff you can't even unlcok on medium, which is the difficulty I play on, which in general sucks.
Well, Overall this is a really good game, and if you're a guitar hero fan this is a must buy, with great graphics, pretty good song selection, and lots of replay value. I actually mostly bought this so I could get Guitar Hero: Van Halen for free and actually I play guitar hero with the guitar, our family is poor, and I'm only 14 and don't make much money, but still even with this is an awesome game!! Recommeneded for Guitar Hero fans, and people who need to complete their collection.

Band Hero featuring Taylor Swift Review

Band Hero featuring Taylor Swift
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game was a nice alternative to Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band. It offers a wider variety than just rock, metal, and emo songs. I'm still waiting for more DLC pop songs that are more popular or recent than the included setlist, as some of the songs are outdated.
The pros to this game are the multiple mics capability. Some times people feel more comfortable singing with others which makes for a better party than, forcing someone to use the mic as the only instrument left. You do receive individual scores with the mics. There's also a party mode where people can jump in and out whenever they want to with the instruments. The only down side is that you can't choose the songs in party mode. Another nice option was the playlist option. Instead of having to pick songs for a playist by default like GHWT, you can turn that option on or off for Band Hero. So people don't get confused with either pressing the green button or the start button. (On Xbox360)
The cons to this game is that it follows the user interface like GHWT. Only the band leader can control the stats screen and choose songs. This gets annoying when your an impatient person and the band leader isn't paying attention to the game. Also, you can't choose your difficulty level right before each song. Instead you have to either back out to the players menu and change it there, or the individual instrument has to press start and change difficulty and restart the song. Either way it's more time wasted than Rock Band's simple difficulty menu before each song. Another annoyance for people with slightly imperfect eye-hand coordination is that Band Hero has less tolerance for error in hitting the notes. You pretty much have to hit them dead on or it will count as a miss. When I was playing I hit all the notes fine, but when my sister was playing she thought there was something wrong with all three of my guitars. Then we realized it was the game.
Overall, this game is fun to play if you're into the pop songs included. I'm sure there will be guys out there who aren't willing to sing Taylor Swift, Jesse McCartney and Hillary Duff, but it's definitely fun to watch if you can get them to do it. Good times....

Transformers the Game Review

Transformers the Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Transformers The Game might seem like a perfect fusion of action-movie sci-fi fun with a Grand Theft Auto free-roam map style. Unfortunately, the game really needed a few more months in development before it could be called finished.
First, the good. The transformation sequences are really cool, as you leap from being a large fighting robot and land as a fast sports car. There are of course a number of different vehicles to choose from, depending on which character you are. You don't get to choose the character, though. You choose a side, good or bad, and then as the storyline progresses you play through as a variety of characters. The mission tree is very linear, and each stage has its own main character and goals.
The cut scenes are relatively short and help to move the story along. You can of course skip them if you want to launch right into destructive mayhem.
You would think with a "town" to explore that there'd be a lot to do and see. And in fact they do have the traditional hidden items for you to gather up from back alleys and such. However, the game is always driving you hard to go to the next spot and start the next mission. When you do, you have very short time limits to get a certain task done - destroy all of the ZZZZs, fight all of the YYYYs, move from point A to B. Sometimes the missions are a combination - move from A to B, destroy a bunch of ZZZZs, move from B to C, destroy a bunch of ZZZZs, and so on.
This is where the game gets extremely frustrating. Missions go on for long periods of time, with repetitive inane tasks, and if you get stuck on one part of the task, you go all the way back to the beginning. That wouldn't be bad if the game controls were responsive and the gameplay itself was sensical. However, the driving controls are just awful. Everyone I've shown the game to agrees on this. So you're trying to run blockades and get from A to B in .2 seconds, and the car slides a little - so you run into an immovable sign. Never mind that you were just pushing aside cop cars and military tanks as if they were fleas. This sign just won't let you past, the car won't reverse properly, and your time limit runs out. Restart.
There are all sorts of corners that you should be able to fit through, that your vehicle gets inexplicably stuck on. You have a great array of guns, but the enemies seem to need to get light poles thrown at them before their shields go down. Half the time you are pointed right at the enemy, but somehow the targetting reticule isn't quite there and your gigantic bus you're throwing misses them. Other times, you simply cannot target them - your robot locks into position either 90 degrees left or right of where you want to throw.
Once you finish a given mission, the "mission start spot" remains on the world map so that you can go back and replay it if you wish. However, many of these mission start spots are in key intersections in the street network - so when you're racing along trying to get to another mission, it jams you up and asks you to accept or decline the previous mission before you can continue. On the other hand, several times when you're trying to get to a green target spot, and clearly go through the green spot, the game doesn't recognize it until you back up, turn around and go into it again.
These issues are bad enough for adult gamers who often have built up great skill in driving and camera-work games but I imagine the target audience here is the younger set, the kids who actually play with Transformers. Parents who are buying this game for those younger kids are going to have to deal with the frustration of kids who repeatedly keep trying a mission, only to fail because - while cops have a street barricaded - traffic inexplicably keeps driving right through the barricade and getting in your way.
A great idea, and some of the cut scenes and transformations really are quite neat. However, gameplay needed to be tuned for another few months before it was ready for prime time.

Tony Hawk: Ride Skateboard Bundle Review

Tony Hawk: Ride Skateboard Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I own this game, have written a trick guide for it, and overall know how to play this game. I wanted to write a review so that others can see the high and low aspects of this game and not just people that give it a score of 1 and go into a rant because they can't figure out the game.
Let's face it folks, not everybody will figure this game out. This game is not for everybody. I am horrible at Madden. I have tried Madden games since Madden 93. After Madden 05, I slowed down with the games and they just got so complex to the point where I just stumbled through playing them. I will not rate those games as a 1 star because I am not good at them.
The joy of this game is that it will trick you. This game is Tony Hawk to its core. This is a completely new Tony Hawk experience, and you need to learn how to play the new experience. Most people will see a skateboard controller, see the Tony Hawk name, and assume that Tony Hawk went soft on us. They will assume that Tony Hawk just tried to capitalize on the casual gamers by making an easy game where you just stand on a skateboard controller, wiggle it a little, and do a 900.
Anybody that thinks that way will be in for quite a bit shock when they start playing this game. You should be afraid of this game. Not because it is bad, but because once you figure out how to play, you will realize that this game plays alot like Tony Hawk 1, but with the inclusion of manuals and a different way of rotating when in vert. This game is for the Tony Hawk fans. This game is not for a casual gamer. Then again, I would like to see any casual gamer dominate in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.
Every single review I have read of this game that has given it a bad review, is because of 1 of 2 things:
1.) The person could not figure out how to play, so they immediately take that as a personal attack on them, and say the game is horrible.
2.) They did not allow for the full 4 feet of space in between objects and the sensors on the controller when calibrating the controller.
Now onto the rest of the review...
Learning Curve
--------------
The learning curve is either very fast or very slow depending on how stubborn you are about learning how to play the game. The game will start you with some tutorials, but just give you a taste and not finish off the rest of the tutorials. If you go through those tutorials, the learning curve is very small. If you do not want to do that, google my guide, and I know for a fact that the learning curve will actually be smaller using my guide than trying the videos.
Not knowing how to play and then wondering why it is difficult would be the equivalent of me hitting one button on Madden 10 and getting mad that they did not map every single action to my A button. If you are willing to learn instead of just trying the game without any knowledge, than you will find the learning curve is not bad. In fact, it is very small.
Gameplay
--------
The gameplay is split up into 5 modes:
Speed, Trick, Challenge, Free Skate, and Vert
I will go into each mode and explain them along with the up and down sides with each mode
---------------
I will start by saying that to know what kind of score you need for maximum points on a specific session mode, just look at the default high scores. Try to beat the default high scores to get the maximum points (which is normally 15 points per session mode)
Speed:
In this mode, this will appear on the surface as simple, until you realize what you need to do. You need to get to the end within a certain amount of time in order to get point for your run. Most runs will give you 15 session points. Basically, you need session points to unlock new areas, skaters, and extra challenges.
What you need to do as you go through the run is collect the green bubbles which take time off of the timer going up to make your run shorter. Some of the good bubbles, like the 3 and 4 second bubbles, you have to hit a jump or a specific grind to get them.
The biggest issue with this mode is that it is a speed run. This is Tony Hawk here. We want tricks and insane, outlandish combos.
The upside is that the mode is fun. For the people that can't figure out tricks and you want to have a Tony Hawk Ride party, just let them play this mode.
Trick:
This is pretty self explanatory. Try to hit a run and get the high score.
Doing tricks is very easy. Anybody that has trouble should google my guide and see how to do tricks. They are super easy.
Once you figure out how to do tricks, on casual, unless you miss a jump, which is rare, the game present no challenge, and doing tricks is too simple.
Taking the difficulty up to Confident or Hardcore makes trick mode much more fun.
Do not complain about tricks being hard or the controller being unresponsive. I am a 250lbs man and can hit any trick in the game. I do not know what other people's problems are. I almost went into a rant again about people saying games are bad because they are bad at them, but I will hold off.
Challenge:
This is actually my favorite mode of the game. The challenges will start easy, but ramp up as you go through the later stages. The challenges will challenge you to keep up trick transitions and combos.
The only gripe I have about this mode is that you truly need to know what you are doing in the game and how to do all the tricks before this mode starts. In Tony Hawk: Ride, you will just be plopped into the challenges later on in the game and the game will just expect that you already when through all the videos.
One challenge in particular, the challenge is to do an advanced grab over a break in a QP, then jump onto small bleachers, grind them, jump off onto a manual, and then jump onto another set of bleachers to finish off the combo. The problem is that the game never explicitly tells you, "Hey, We are doing something new, go watch the tutorial video on how to do it" Because of this, even myself, I would find myself scratching my head trying to figure out how to do some of this stuff. The game literally assumed that you will go through the beginning tutorial stuff, and then choose to personally go through the other training videos and never really say anything about the fact that is a a good idea to go there since there is no other way to know how to do some of the stuff it tells you to do outside of a google search.
Other than that, challenge mode is amazing and super fun.
Free Skate:
This is what it is. Just skate a run for fun. That is it.
I don't have any gripes with this mode as it is good for practicing.
Vert:
This is also what it sounds like. Vert is pretty fun. Popping the board up at just the correct time to hit a 720 is very satisfying.
The gripe I have with this is turning in Vert. Sometimes it makes sense to tile the board back, but you should be tilting it forward. Really, you do not need to turn in Vert unless you are going for acheivements (well, one or 2 half pipes require you to turn just after you launch down, but that is it)
Other than that, Vert is super fun. The way to do big spins to to pop your board near the top of the pipe, and learning the timing is half of the fun.
Sound
-----
Like every Tony Hawk game, the soundtrack is awesome. The songs are good. The sound effects sound great.
Really, not much needs to be said since there is nothing bad. Good sound effects, good soundtrack.
Graphics
---------
This is one area where this game is getting set to 4 star from me. The graphics are not near as good as what Activision has shown from other Tony Hawk games on the 360. Project 8 and Proving Grounds (the latest Tony Hawk) put this game to shame by far. This is the latest Tony Hawk, so it should at the very minimum have graphics that are on par with its previous installment. The graphics on this make the 360 version look more like an average wii version and is definately not the eye candy we got with Project 8 or Proving Grounds.
Story
-----
Yeah, just kidding. This is not THUG or THUG 2, there is not story.
Overall
-------
This is a great game. It plays and feels like a good Tony Hawk game. The controls feel right and doing tricks is satisfying. Trust me, once you learn how easy it is to do flick tricks from an ollie setup, you will be like me and fall in love with the flick tricks. I love going from flick trick into grind (not a 50-50, but something wierd for fun, like a salad grind), jump out of the grind, hit a manual, do a pop shove-it, then jump back into another grind. That seems like a lot, but it is my favorite combo and just feels satisfying to hit.
This game is great because you are not just hitting a button to do a trick. Yes, you are doing a motion that possibly has nothing to do with the real trick, but it still incredbly satisfying to hit tricks in this game.
That satisfaction of hitting the tricks is what makes this game so incredibly fun. This game would have gotten 5 out of 5, but the graphics are very sub par for a Tony Hawk game, so it lost a star for graphics, which is a very valid reason to take a star off.

Fans of board sports will love the authentic experience of the board controller, while the intuitive nature of the board and multiple difficulty settings make it a fun and exciting experience for people of all ages and skill levels. The ease with which anyone can pick up and play this game and each player's unique playing style make this a fun social game for friends and family to play together. So, are you ready to Ride? Closely resembling a "deck"--a board withoutwheels or trucks, which allow actual skateboards to maneuver their boards--theRide controller is built around a combination of flat and roundedsurfaces. Along the majority of the boards upper surface, as well as themiddle center portion of its bottom, players will find flat, level surfacesthat provide for players' balance. This is countered by the rounded edgesalong the top at either ends, as well as the bottom outer edges. Theseallow for true to life trick performance mechanics which allows gamerscan experience a full range of movement as they rotate, tilt and liftthe board in a variety of ways to discover every trick in the game. In addition, the Ride board comes with features designed tomaximize ease and continuity of play. These include an upper surface texturesimilar to the grip tape used on real boards to help maintain player contactwith and control of the board, and a full set of traditional navigationalbuttons that allow the player to interact with the game between levelsand online when it is more convenient to do so. Anyone Can Ride Tony Hawk: Ride is designed to be fully accessible to everyone – from hardcore fans to players with no prior skateboarding experience. Moving away from the open-world game environment that recent releases in the franchise have embraced, Ride is instead built around a wide range of mini-challenges and events more concerned with riding than exploration. These cover every genre in modern skateboarding and aim to focus the player's attention on developing their skills with the board. And this is easy to do with addictive and engrossing gameplay without complex button combinations or analog sticks that allow gamers to literally step on the board and play. Exciting, Immersive and Social Game Play Tony Hawk: Ride features a diverse set of trick, vert, and speed challenges that allow players at all levels to take on their friends and family as they compete with each other via "Hot Seat" game play. History Channel Civil War: A Nation Divided Review

History Channel Civil War: A Nation Divided
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Civil War - A Nation Divided, by the History Channel, lets you play as the north or the south. This first person shooter tries to immerse you in the gritty brother-on-brother fighting.
For people used to the fast paced guns and assaults of the various World War II games, Civil War can be a lesson in patience. When you take a shot with certain weapons, there's a long reloading sequence before you can take a second shot. For those who complain this is too long, it's actually a shortened version from how reloading worked back then. There are cannons to fire, covered wagons to hide behind, and explosives to set.
Civil War is an odd mix when it comes to graphics. On one hand, the fire graphics are pretty realistic, and the rippling streams beneath the bridges add a nice ambiance. On the other hand, there are clipping errors all over the place, with bodies mixing into each other and into nearby scenery.
The missions are standard wargame fare - kill off certain soldiers, blow up certain obstacles, get to certain destinations. The game, however, makes this challenging in ways which are not historically accurate. Somehow, people are able to shoot you from completely blocked vantage points. On the other hand, if you crouch behind a barricade, half the time they can still shoot you, because you absently seem to leave body parts (like your head) poking up over the top.
AI can be really awful. We've thrown a grenade at an enemy and he has completely ignored it (even though it literally bounced off of him) - he just kept reloading his rifle until the grenade exploded.
Buildings are indestructable - even with cannons - and are not properly proportioned. When you walk over to them, they're sized like hobbit houses. Odd ...
The sound is nice on the menus, but in-game it's just a lot of screaming and repetitive gunshots. It would have been nice to have some period music playing in the background.
Repetitive is really a common theme in this game. The maps are very linear. The comments made by friend and foe are repetitive. The animations are so simple and overused that you get the sense that you're fighting an army of clones.
There's no multiplayer at all, and even many months after the game was released, the downloadable content menu area does not provide access to anything.
If they'd spent a few more months on this game, it might have really been a lot of fun. However, the way it is now, you get the sense that you're playing a beta release.

DJ Hero Bundle with Turntable Review

DJ Hero Bundle with Turntable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ah, the "Hero" games. I really liked some of the "Guitar Hero" games and I'm looking forward to "Lego Rock Band" (not part of the same series, but at least the same idea). Mind you, I pretty much suck at these games, but still I find them to be enjoyable.
Now comes "DJ Hero" the latest incarnation of the "Hero" series. I spent some time last night playing with a demo version of it, and I found it... decent. Not great, but decent.
The basic idea is the same as the other games. You hear music, you see the screen telling you what buttons to press and you do as you're told. Easy to learn, difficult to master, as some might say.
I actually found the learning curve on this to be steeper than I liked. The easy setting isn't as easy as I might prefer and the medium setting (where you have to use the cross-fader), is entirely too difficult. I had a friend over and he aced the easy section, but once the cross-fader was introduced, he was totally doomed.
One nice feature of the game is that you can have someone use a guitar controller and play in a vs mode against each other. My friend and I did that, and it worked out fairly well, though you're each playing a different track and that might take a little getting used to.
I also found the positioning of the blue button on the turntable to be a little awkward. Scratch moves are a big part of the game, and they're easy to do with the green button, but very hard with the blue button. On the other hand, the turntable controller includes lefty support, and as a southpaw, I'm pleased with that.
The game's equivalent of the "star power" feature from the guitar games is called "Euphoria" and it works out ok, as does the "rewind" feature that allows you to back up a few seconds and reply a few notes.
I was also reasonably pleased with the selection of songs. I had only a demo version of the game, so the selection was limited to only a few songs, but they were well done and easy to listen to. As for the graphics, they were supremely good and looked great on my new 42" LCD TV, though my DJ looked hideous.
Overall I enjoyed the time I had with the game. I don't know that I'd buy a copy any time soon, but maybe once it's a Greatest Hits kind of thing. I just don't enjoy the whole dj experience or dj culture enough to want it at full price. Those who do enjoy such things will likely really get a kick out of this game!

James Bond 007: Blood Stone Review

James Bond 007: Blood Stone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I picked up Blood Stone last night and decided to keep it despite the horrible early review of 5/10 by IGN.
Blood Stone is Splinter Cell Conviction meets The Bourne Conspiracy, meets Batman Arkham Asylum. It borrows Convictions Mark & Execute feature which is granted one mark at a time by hand-to-hand combat (which is pretty satisfying by the way), and also has a lot of stealth elements. The running and takedowns reminded me a lot of Bourne, also with high octane chases and so forth. It borrows from Batman by using his Smartphone to see where enemies are on the map, with minor detective work.
I have 3 gripes with the game though:
1. It incredibly short... I beat it last night with a time of 5 hours.
2. The cut-scenes and lip synching are definitely not polished.
3. The sound is really bad; I usually have my receiver at -24 for gaming, but I had to turn it up to -18 for decent sound.
I can see why IGN was so harsh, but on the other hand I can see why Game Informer gave it 7/10. Despite the listed problem, this actually was a very entertaining game, but at the moment it's more a rental than a $60 purchase.
There are however certain areas that have polish... the hand-to-hand combat is perfect in every which way, it's very easy to silently take someone down, and the transition from gun shooting to a takedown is just as seamless as SC or UC. I thought the guns handling was awesome, and the focus mode is really easy to switch to when several guys are shooting at you.
The car chases are actually pretty decent, way better than the crap they put on The Bourne Conspiracy. You have about 4 chases and each one is unique and gives a nice break in-between stealth and gun fights.
So if anyone is on the fence in here, I would say if you love games like Splinter Cell and The Bourne Conspiracy, then you will definitely love Blood Stone. However, I honestly don't believe it's worth $60... I would either rent it, or wait for black Friday or even Christmas. I guarantee the games price will be chopped in half by then.

Secret Service: Ultimate Sacrifice Review

Secret Service: Ultimate Sacrifice
Average Reviews:

Maybe my opion is jaded since so many downright BAD games have come out for the 360, but this game is not bad. The controls seem pretty realistic, not twitchy or loose, actually the guns all have a lot of recoil so running around and shooting can be difficult, you really are better off finding cover and picking people off. There is a decent assortment of weapons, a pretty diverse assortment of levels, actually in all honesty, the final level takes place on Air Force One, and I would argue that although this level is probably the shortest in the game, and the final 'boss' may be very well one of the easiest ever, the level itself was very very fun and unique.
As far as first person shooters go you can do a lot worse (games like Legendary, Turning Point, Wanted etc). This game will take you about 8-10 hours to beat, and you may want to play through again to touch up on some of the achievements and collectibles etc, but the 8-10 hours really will be enjoyed since this game does offer something a little different.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Review

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Way back when Spiderman 2: The Game was being developed, someone had the brilliant revelation that what made Spiderman fun to play as was his amazing ability to locomote. This individual decided that the best way to represent this was to basically create (God forgive me) Grand Theft Spiderman. Riffing on the first line of the movie "My city, my playground" the developers made a detailed model of Manhattan for players to swing through. And by the way, they made web swinging intuitive and awesome. Since this time, all the Spiderman games (of which this, Spiderman: Web of Shadows, is the third) have stuck with this open world formula.
This is both a good and a bad thing. The Grand Theft Auto comparison is intentional, as the Spiderman series has take the best and worst from that series. The open world, the massive amount of hidden items, the seemingly arbitrary spike in mission difficulty, the inability to find ANYTHING until you've spent hours wandering around lost until you've started to memorize the map, plus a new one that is probably a superhero exclusive- random city events like burglaries and gang shootouts. In short, the games were a blast to play- until you actually tried to play it. Now, I'm not saying that the missions were all bad- but the general impression, like running into a gang shooting for the third time when you're trying to get somewhere- it get's annoying.
While Web of Shadows continues all of these trends, it tackles an issue that the previous game ignored: in the comics, and the movies, there was often little difference between locomotion and combat. WoS tackles this in a fairly good way, making easy to go from locomotion to combat, and back again, stringing together some massive combos against multiple enemies (the first achievement I unlocked was for a 50 hit combo- and I was just screwing around in the first 5 minutes of playtime). Going from the ground to the wall to the air is easy and the transition is better represented then in any previous Spiderman game. However, this freedom of movement can lead to some difficulties as the lock-on camera just never had a chance and will occasionally spaz out. The lock- on also lead to some frustration as moving the right analog stick while locked on will change targets (or some foolishness), this lead to me spending several seconds running around in circles with a live bomb on my back.
I must admit that this is more of a first impressions then a true review, as I am only a couple of hours into the game- and I spent most of that time just screwing around. The story hasn't quite kicked of yet, but pulling from the prerelease press it seems that an invasion of Symbiotes (with a capital "S") is gripping New York. This leads anyone with a passing familiarity with the comics to Venom, and a battle that leads to Spiderman being re-infected with the Black Suit serves as a tutorial. I don't really expect anything earth shaking out of the story, so far it has followed the formula of cramming in as many Marvel super hero/villian cameos as they can while stringing together a halfway decent story. So, in short, if you liked the last three Spiderman games, you'll like Web of Shadows. It provides probably the best superhero simulation to date and is a solid game, if not an especially innovative one.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Review

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Transformers video game for XBox 360 that was released with the first film was designed by Travelers Tails (company best known for Lego Starwars, Lego Batman, etc...). That game had many flaws in terms of control, overall simplicity, etc... It was a typical run-of-the-mil movie tie in game given little effort to work out the kinks or provide players with any depth of play.
This title is the first fruit from Activison's exclusive deal with Hasbro to bring TF console and PC games to market (there will be more time come and not all movie tie-ins either). While this game isn't perfect, it's a big leap forward in many areas. I'm written this review for those who've played the previous game, here's a short-list of what they've improved/fixed.
1. Melee combat is now challenging and viable. You can charge attacks, pull of combos, etc...
2. The targeting system is hugely improved. With primary and secondary weapons.
3. Once a Transformer has been unlocked (after using that Transformer in a mission) then that Transformer can be selected for any following mission (in other words, players aren't locked into playing a specific transformer for certain missions).
3. Each character has a unique ability (e.g. Rachet can heal, Bumblebee can stun).
4. Players earn points and can spend them on upgrades!
5. Vastly improved enemy AI (e.g. they transform and run evade when damaged then come back in).
6. On-line head to head multiplayer with different forms of combat (when you combine this with the improved melee and specialty abilities, it's quite nice)
I've only gotten about 1/4 of the way done with it, but it's almost as if Activision went down the list of players complaints and tried to make exactly the type of game we wanted. It's still a movie tie-in game in that you're playing out the movie, but it's done right.
Not sure what else I would add here. I suppose allowing two or more players to team up in the missions would be something to consider adding in the the next game, but overall this is quite nice. Kudos to the dev team!

Delivering extensive control, gamers can select from the largest, most diverse range of playable Transformers ever – each with distinct personalities, abilities and weaponry – and jump straight into action as they instantly switch between robot, vehicle and weapon modes to fight for the preservation or annihilation of all mankind. In addition, for the first time in the Transformers universe, players can also fight the epic war between Autobots and Decepticons online in explosive multiplayer combat. The Story Set a few years after the defeat of Megatron in the first game/movie,Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen reveals that the threat fromthe Decepticons is in fact, far from ended. Since the time of the epicand apparently not so final battle between the two Transformer leaders,Decepticons have started popping up again all over Earth in alarming numbers. And now, a mysterious object from space seems destined to shift the balanceof power and give the upper hand to the Decepticons. Mission-centric Gameplay Unlike Activision's Transformers: The Game, released along side the original movie back in 2007, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen relies less on open-world gameplay and more on structured, but varied mission play. The variety in these missions comes from the fact that players can align themselves with either the Autobots or Decepticons, and that the available missions both parallel the events of the movie, as well as events unique to the game. During these missions players will be able to play as a variety of different Transformers from either side of the conflict, and with success in mission play will be able to unlock additional Transformers and earn points used to upgrade your selected faction. Playable characters include on the Autobot side: Optimus Prime, Iron Hide, Breakaway, Bumblebee, and Ratchet; and from the Decepticon side: Starscream, Sideways (a new character), Grindor, Long Haul, and Megatron. Additional Transformer types will be available in multiplayer modes. The game features a simple control toggle that not only allows for quick switching between mech, vehicle and weapon forms, but also allows for a more easy learning curve of the acrobatic moves from the movie.
