Marvel Ultimate Alliance Gold Edition Review

Marvel Ultimate Alliance Gold Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I'm no hardcore gamer. I just happened to be browsing some gaming magazine when the ad got me. Being a big fan of the comics, I decided to give it a try. I mean, come on, who wouldn't want to be able to pair up Spidey with Iceman and The Human Torch and whoever catches your fancy? And the game delivers a lot of punch in many ways. The difference between this game and the normal edition is this edition comes with 8 extra characters that are already available as xb live downloadable content.
GAMEPLAY: Campaign mode is pretty straightforward. You can walk through the entire thing and it makes for a lot of gametime. It is kind of reminiscient of the Ninja Turtle series from back in the 90's where you pretty much follow a straight map (except in this case, there are some side rooms that you can explore in each level), kill some enemies, get to a minor boss, kill more enemies, then get to the final boss. Obviously, you have to expect the occasional roadblock - 'What am I going to do to get past this flaming doorblock?' situations where simple puzzles can come in play, but overall, getting through levels is a sort of linear kind of thing. The whole game probably takes about 18-25hrs to beat on normal. But then you won't necessarily unlock all the superheroes and costumes and whatnot. The side simulator missions are also a lot of fun and add an extra leveling up element to the game, so I guess that's what keeps you going. You unlock hard mode after beating normal once. Very replayable game, I've already beaten the story at least 4 times across three difficulty levels. GRADE: A
THE RPG ELEMENT: Activision markets this as an action/rpg game, and while there is lots of action (as I mentioned, the Ninja Turtle game flashback it brought me), there are elements of RPG. Whenever you pick up 'money' on the map and level up, you can spend points leveling up character skills and abilities. The items you equip your characters with will also matter in the same way. The system is rather straightforward and being my first game from the 'series' (apparently this is the successor to some XMen Legends game?), it did not take me long to learn about where this element kicks in. GRADE: A
THE CO-OP ELEMENT: Co-op is awesome and I definitely prefer that to playing alone. You can team up with 1-3 of your friends for some 2-4 player co-op. xb Live allows for some smooth gameplay even while online. While camera views can be annoying at times, you can easily tell that the programmers put a lot of time into making co-op gameplay here really smooth. One weird thing about this though, with comic missions, the main character is controlled by one player and enemies which are, surprise surprise, not controlled by the AI if you've been playing co-op. Kind of eliminates that whole challenge feel to it if you look at it in one way. GRADE: A+
GRAPHICS: Almost comical. Not as in funny comical, but as in like the comic books. Graphics looked much better than on a PS2, but still there were some problems. Heck, the cinematics looked awesome. But for the most part, gameplay graphics were pretty tight. I found some of the animations rather sorry, like the lime green-ness, almost-to-the-state-of-previous-gen-ness of the Fin Fang Foom, but other than that, I really don't have much complaints. So don't expect Gears of War graphics here. GRADE: B+
STORY: Any game that can capture the essence of every superhero's personality while at the same time painting this captivating story as it unravels gets my props. Although sometimes, in the middle of a mission, the small things that go wrong that you and your group must fix up, these things can make you lose sight of the big picture. GRADE: B+
COMPLAINTS:
- Dialogue is kind of key in this game for the most part. At times dialogue pops up in the worst time (immediately after a fight) such that I found me or one of my friends mistakenly hitting the 'continue' button (A) right through the dialogue as if the fight was still going on (A = the attack button).
- Reviving characters: So in battle, if one of your group gets KO'ed, there's a resting period. When the resting period is over, a message pops up saying that the character of interest is fully rested, but instead of letting him/her pop out just as if to rejoin the group, you always have to get to some save point to activate that character again.
---
Once again, being not that hardcore of a gamer, I can't really say much in the way of in-depth game reviews. But here's the bottom line:
- This game is definitely one to be played co-op. My brother and I grew up playing these types of games and having hours and hours of fun together with these (heh... Ninja Turtles).
- Don't get this if you're looking for straight RPG. True, there is an RPG element, but not as much in the way of world-exploration and stuff that have surrounded some of the world's best RPGs.
- This game is mission-based, with different levels separated into 5 acts that will load from your home base. Think Splinter Cell or soldier FPS games where you have one level, side missions that pop up when things screw up, and then an overall mission goal that must be beaten for you to return to home base.

I purchased this game in order to play a cooperative game with my 7 year old son. It's very similar in game play to the Lego games. We are having a good time with it. It's not going to be a good fit for older players looking for a challenge, but it's a fun little diversion and it is priced right.

Street Fighter IV Round 2 FightPad Review

Street Fighter IV Round 2 FightPad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, The SF4 round 2 fightpad is almost exactly the same as the round 1 model. The only change is the artwork, obviously. The buttons feel responsive with the exception of the ones on the shoulders. I feel as if the shoulder buttons don't depress enough to give me the satisfaction of pressing a button, but they do make a clicking sound so it's acceptable. The rubber grips work well I suppose, my hands don't sweat at all even if I play for hrs. I personally think that the "turbo" button is too close to the "back" button, I used to hit it accidentally while trying to press back(until I opened up the controller and removed the turbo button lol). The D-Pad still has its huge size but I don't mind at all as moves come out easier. If I had to describe how it feels, I'd say its like the D-Pad was placed on the shaft of joystick. I have 2 MAJOR gripes with these controllers. 1. The plastic MC uses on the D-Pad is too slippery(coming from a man whose hands don't sweat during play). I modified my D-Pad to my liking, some people prefer it the way it is. My 2nd gripe with the controller is that after awhile of heavy use, the D-Pad gets "mushy" and sometimes sticks in place. I opened up the controller and discovered that the mushiness was a result of the silicon membrane(the thing that makes buttons pop back up after you press em') underneath the D-Pad was actually breaking!!! I find that unacceptable since my wired 360 controller which I had for over 3 years still works fine. Maybe madcatz should sell silicon membranes for the people who spend $40 a pop just to get a new one(since the controller itself is fine, just the D-Pad membrane). So is this controller good for fighting games, YES. Would I buy another one if this one malfunctions, NO. Hope you found this helpful.

X-men: The Official Game Review

X-men: The Official Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not always is a game based off a movie bad. There really are some good ones out there. However, there are some that truly are bad and should be avoided. X-Men: The Offical Game is that game. The game overall is pretty poor. The developers didn't seem to take it seriously. The game is meant to connect The second X-Men movie with the third one. Unfortunately, the game just reeks of bad quality. Perhaps if it had spent more time in development, the game could've been good. Instead it's rather bland.
The game begins with a training mission with each character. This is simply to get you adjusted to the gameplay mechanics. Later on you'll come to see these training missions are just a waste of time. Playing the game is already simple as can be. Afterwards, you go back to Alkali Lake as Nightcrawler and recover parts of Cerebro. Afterwards you'll be given a choice between which scenario you want.
Throughout the entire game you'll only get to play as three characters. Wolverine, Iceman or Nightcrawler. Each of them have their own abilities, and their own scenarios. Once you pick one character, you're stuck with them until their scenario is over. You won't really run into the other playable characters a lot, though. Neither are the scenarios very hard or exciting.
X-Men is pretty much a simple beat 'em up game, with little bits and pieces of story thrown in for good measure. The story isn't really impressive, though. It's hard to follow, and the game doesn't put an emphasis on it. What voice acting there is isn't so bad. At least the voices that come from the stars of the film. You'll recognize them instantly. Those who aren't voiced by celebrities don't sound all that great. The story also unfolds mostly through storyboards rather than cinematics.
But what emphasis there is on gameplay is simplistic and mediocre. All you've got to do is beat people up. You might have to open a door or something, but that's about it. It isn't that the game is a beat 'em up that frustrates me. It's that there's nothing more to it than button mashing. And there aren't a lot of combos to perform either. As I said, it's simplistic.
Outside of beating up your enemies, you may have to telport as Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler does have a healing ability, and so does Iceman, but I'm quite sure they didn't have one before. Iceman's levels are a little more interesting than the others, seeing as how his are constantly moving along. The bulk of the game, however, is simply beating up your enemies. And as I mentioned, there isn't a whole lot of variety to beating them up.
There are moments when the game can be hard. Well, frustrating actually. The game doesn't provide a lot of difficulty, but it does provide you with having to charge at your enemies head on to--you guessed it--beat them up. You'll have to run through bullets to get to most of them, and that can be a little annoying.
Boss fights aren't really exciting either. Those consist of you performing a simple little dash and hit sort of pattern most of the time. They have predictable patterns and don't really do a whole lot to get you. Again, this makes the game rather easy.
Where the game really hits a low point are the graphics. There are some glitches that might make you question the graphics. For example, you can knock an enemy into a wall and they'll get stuck there, unable to get out of it, and unable to damage you. Sometimes enemies will pop up out of no where and there's no explanation. If these sorts of things only happened once or twice, I wouldn't mind. But they don't. They happen numerous times and constantly. I wish I could say the game looks good, but for the XBOX360 it looks rather lame. It's a bit more colorful than the regular XBOX version, but it looks disturbingly identical in all respects. So if you've got the regular XBOX, it really isn't all that different.
It's also rather annoying that the character selection is only limited to three characters. There could've been more characters than just Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Iceman. They each play a little differently, but they're the only three characters. That's rather disappointing.
This is nothing more than a Cash Cow game. It's nothing but a beat 'em up game with little variety. If it had spent more time in development, it probably would've been a better experience overall. There are better games out there. Ones with a bit more quality than this. I can't recommend this one. Not at all.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds Review

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, I finally got a few days of gameplay with MvC3, and I don't really have too many complaints...not many that can't be fixed with a patch or two anyway. First, let's start with the game itself. Everyone will be comparing this one to Marvel vs. Capcom 2, so let's get right to it.
This game launched with 36 characters, while MvC2 had a total of 56. Yes, if you haven't heard, the sequel has 20 characters less. Is this a bad thing? Depends on who you ask. The majority of the online MVC community is extremely upset that this game launched with less characters...however the biggest difference is you don't have "clones" in this game. In MvC2, you had several characters with nearly identical clones. Iron Man had War Machine...There were 2 Wolverines, Mega Man and Roll...did they play 100% identical. No, not at all, however you had a few characters that played extremely similar in MvC2...in MvC3 though, everyone is a completely different playstyle. The closest you get is Ryu and Akuma in terms of 2 characters playing similar. With that being said, 2 characters are being launched as DLC within the month (Jill and Shuma-Gorath), which will cut the deficit to 18 characters. I do expect capcom to sell DLC over the next year+, and I wouldn't doubt that by this time next year MvC3 will have tied or have surpassed the character count in MVC2.
Now with the discussion of character DLC, people are arguing and complaining about how capcom is "going to rip the consumer off on DLC that should've been included at launch" etc. Remember that you're buying this game as-is, and that the DLC is something extra, and usually not-neccesary to continue playing the game online or offline. As is, we got 36 characters for a fighting games, 18 from Marvel and 18 from Capcom. I will welcome DLC, especially if it's for a character I would enjoy such as Carnage, Megaman, Ghost Rider, Daredevil etc. Just remember, you're buying the game and it comes with 36 extremely diverse characters.
People who were experts at MvC2, expecting to automatically pick up a controller and make people rage quit online have something coming to them. It's as if this is a brand new game, with ideas from the first 4 games but not the same button config. One light attack, one medium attack, one Heavy attack and one "special" attack. There are two buttons for your assists. And if you hold either of those buttons, you can switch your character out for another. So basically, everyone starts off fresh, and it's a simple game to get a hold of. Think of the button controls as a 75% Street Fighter and 25% Tekken. Button mashers can do well, but obviously those who are willing to take the time to learn the controls will do a lot better.
Mission mode is one of the new additions to the game. Each character has 10 missions for a total of 360 missions. These missions range from very easy (One simple Hadoken) to a complicated, very precisely timed long sequence of button presses. You can learn a lot as a player from doing these missions, and while these missions aren't exactly as hard as Street Fighter/Super Street Fighter IV's Trials, these missions are not to be taken lightly.
Graphics are amazing, sound is amazing. No problems in that area. My only real real real gripe with this game is the lack of two options. First, in player lobbies, something was given to us in street fighter 4 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 that may have spoiled most of us; Spectator Mode. Now, if I want to practice with friends, I have to wait and do absolutly nothing while my other friends play. Meaning, if I'm in a lobby with 7 other people, and I just lost my game, I now need to wait for 5 more games to complete, while i sit and do nothing. No Minigames, no training mode, and no spectator mode. Seriously? At least something to warm up with, like in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii...but no, instead I can watch the life bars deplete. Seriously bad move. While there are rumors that this may appear in the future in a patch, it's not there at launch. Another small feature that's also absent is setting infinite time in Player lobbies. Another feature that's ridiculously absent.
Overall a great game, and with several patches, this could be the best in the series.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance & Forza 2 Review

Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Forza 2
Average Reviews:

They may offer this game at a low price, but I guarantee you that what you get out of the deal is one of the best racing sims (IMO the VERY best) on the Xbox 360, and a great 4-person brawler featuring many popular Marvel Characters.
Forza 2 has great customization and car selection, and all the options to either make the game easy to difficult, depending on your preference. My friends and I have stayed up all night playing this game, trying out new cars and perfecting races. I would say a definite buy, before this game disappears before the shadow of its older brother (Forza 3). Best part? Tricking out my Porsche and then giving it my own special paint job.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance has great multiplayer, and is very simple and easy to play with people who wouldn't normally play video games. I played it with some "nubs" who had never played on a 360 before, and even they were doing well against the Marvel foes. On top of that, it's great to play with the different Marvel characters, in addition to a great story. Best part? Deadpool!

The controller is pretty decent other than the shoulder buttons and control pad feeling a bit mushy. I'm guessing it will be the same regardless of which design chosen. Would have been 4 stars...
Seriously though, why is this thing not wireless? The PS3 version is wireless and costs less. I'm sure Mad Catz will blow smoke saying it is Microsoft's fault but Mad Catz makes the wireless controllers for Rock Band on 360 so what gives? Last year it was annoying, this year there is no excuse and I'm mad at myself for buying it.

Spider-Man 3 Review

Spider-Man 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is more annoying than it is fun. Not because its hard , but because the camera is constantly bouncing off walls and violently shaking and the combat is definately not anything new or inventive. I think much older games like Jade Empire combat blows away Spidey-3. If you press the B button spidey can web an enemy also you can climb walls with the B button. Well guess what I pressed the B button to web an enemy while indoors and instead of spidey throwing a web at the enemy he wall walked on the side of a piano in the room?? Im like ah..no..I dont wanna wall walk this piano right now.Its just bad programming in so many ways. There is ZERO interaction with people and cars in this game. Spiderman might as well be a ghost as every single person in this game pays you absolutly no attention at all, that is of course unless your on a mission. Even when you land on the street , the car and driver dont even swerve or notice you. There's zero interaction. The entire city feels dead , almost depressing in a way. Games like Godfather,GTA,Crackdown all had interaction with nearly every person you walk by or bump into. But not Spiderman there is zero, zip, nada. I just got bored swinging around in a lifeless city. The only highlight in this game is Times Square at night, it looks pretty nice graphic wise. All in all S-3 doesnt have a polished next gen feel to it. I really wanted to like this game but I just cant get past some of the major flaws like the camera and the combat. But if you have children I think this game would be perfect for adolescent to young teens crowd. Worthy of Rent Only for me. PEACE

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Review

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think my title explains my opinion already. I've had this game for a few days and so far, I'm loving every minute of it. Could the controls be a bit tighter? Yeah, I guess so. Does it hinder the gameplay? NO! Not nearly as badly as everyone is saying it does.
I bought Web of Shadows this summer in anticipation for this game. I played all the way through it (did everything, got every single achievement, etc.) and Web of Shadows was probably one of the glitchiest games I've ever played on the 360, hands down. It was a huge sandbox title, and that was great. However, the last 1/3 of the game got so hectic that the whole game engine seemed like it was about to implode on itself. The game wasn't able to maintain 20-25 FPS, which I think is absolutely ridiculous for something released in past 4-5 years. It is especially ridiculous for a non-port console game on the 360, which developers always say is the easiest console to code games for.
Shattered Dimensions runs smooth the entire time. I haven't seen it stutter once since I bought it. The whole game is vibrant and beautiful, and it plays out like one giant comic book. I don't want to say the game is cel-shaded (although on the Amazing and Ultimate levels, it's awful close), but it's definitely something in between normal and cel-shaded. It's perfect for this type of comic-book game.
Did I mention the voice-acting? The voice-acting in this game is INCREDIBLE. (The voice-acting in Web of Shadows was horrendous, so this gets huge marks in my book.) I liked that Stan Lee was brought in for the intro. Another nice surprise was that they brought in Neil Patrick Harris to voice Amazing Spider-Man, which was a great idea and he is probably the coolest Spider-Man voice actor that I've heard in a long time. I'm also really glad that they brought in Christopher Daniel Barnes to voice Noir, because he is my absolute favorite voice-actor for Spider-Man period. Barnes was the voice of Spider-Man in the early '90s Fox Kids cartoon, and he is the voice of Spider-Man that I always hear in my head when I read the comics; the game automatically gains my approval just because he was a part of it.
So I don't mind that the controls aren't as perfect as they could be, because if Beenox did anything right with this game, it was the voice-acting and the art style. Oh, and the storyline? If you have any fond childhood memories of the Fox Kids Spider-Man cartoon from the early '90s, you will go crazy for this game. I can't say enough how much they hit the nail on the head with the story-telling in the cutscenes. It tapped right into all the nostalgia I had from being 7 or 8 years old on a Saturday morning. Totally awesome.
That mostly wraps up how I feel, except for one last point; I'm tired of hearing that people are knocking this game for not being a sandbox title. The reason why this game wouldn't work as a sandbox is because it deals with parallel universes (which was a great plot device by the way - don't believe the naysayers) and there's no way the game would have run smoothly if there were 4 different, completely functional NYC's coded onto the disc. I really could care less that Spider-Man isn't swinging around freely from building to building in NYC, because we got something in return for that sacrifice - richer, more detailed levels in a variety of locations. Honestly, in pretty much every Spider-Man game so far that offers web slinging in a sandbox environment (Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Web of Shadows, etc.) it's been mostly a gimmick anyway. Were any of the locales really any different that you would swing to? No. Are the locales different in this game? Absolutely - every level I've played so far has been completely unique! So stop blaming Beenox for "ruining" Spider-Man. All they did was just try something different, and I think they definitely need more recognition for a job well done! This game is really, really good!
Don't listen to anyone who says this game is a rental / bargain-bin option only. Like I said, if you're a true Spider-Man fan who appreciates quality over quantity and can get over less-than-perfect controls, you should buy this game. Don't hesitate; just buy it. You won't regret it.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Review

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Way back when Spiderman 2: The Game was being developed, someone had the brilliant revelation that what made Spiderman fun to play as was his amazing ability to locomote. This individual decided that the best way to represent this was to basically create (God forgive me) Grand Theft Spiderman. Riffing on the first line of the movie "My city, my playground" the developers made a detailed model of Manhattan for players to swing through. And by the way, they made web swinging intuitive and awesome. Since this time, all the Spiderman games (of which this, Spiderman: Web of Shadows, is the third) have stuck with this open world formula.
This is both a good and a bad thing. The Grand Theft Auto comparison is intentional, as the Spiderman series has take the best and worst from that series. The open world, the massive amount of hidden items, the seemingly arbitrary spike in mission difficulty, the inability to find ANYTHING until you've spent hours wandering around lost until you've started to memorize the map, plus a new one that is probably a superhero exclusive- random city events like burglaries and gang shootouts. In short, the games were a blast to play- until you actually tried to play it. Now, I'm not saying that the missions were all bad- but the general impression, like running into a gang shooting for the third time when you're trying to get somewhere- it get's annoying.
While Web of Shadows continues all of these trends, it tackles an issue that the previous game ignored: in the comics, and the movies, there was often little difference between locomotion and combat. WoS tackles this in a fairly good way, making easy to go from locomotion to combat, and back again, stringing together some massive combos against multiple enemies (the first achievement I unlocked was for a 50 hit combo- and I was just screwing around in the first 5 minutes of playtime). Going from the ground to the wall to the air is easy and the transition is better represented then in any previous Spiderman game. However, this freedom of movement can lead to some difficulties as the lock-on camera just never had a chance and will occasionally spaz out. The lock- on also lead to some frustration as moving the right analog stick while locked on will change targets (or some foolishness), this lead to me spending several seconds running around in circles with a live bomb on my back.
I must admit that this is more of a first impressions then a true review, as I am only a couple of hours into the game- and I spent most of that time just screwing around. The story hasn't quite kicked of yet, but pulling from the prerelease press it seems that an invasion of Symbiotes (with a capital "S") is gripping New York. This leads anyone with a passing familiarity with the comics to Venom, and a battle that leads to Spiderman being re-infected with the Black Suit serves as a tutorial. I don't really expect anything earth shaking out of the story, so far it has followed the formula of cramming in as many Marvel super hero/villian cameos as they can while stringing together a halfway decent story. So, in short, if you liked the last three Spiderman games, you'll like Web of Shadows. It provides probably the best superhero simulation to date and is a solid game, if not an especially innovative one.

Iron Man 2 Review

Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2 is a step above its predecessor in almost every way. The flight controls are so much easier to use in Iron Man 2 which makes for a better experience controlling the main character. I enjoyed this game for the most part, I know it isn't the greatest game of all time and yes it was short, but I found it to serve its purpose. The ability to play as both Iron Man and War Machine was a nice added bonus as well which added a little replay to the game. Overall, I can't recommend this game because of it's short length and asking for a full price of $59.99 is a bit too much. $29.99 is a fair price for this game and if and when it drops to that price, maybe it is worth checking out.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Review

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

What new buyers may not know is that Activision has removed and canceled their DLC support as well as terminated (allegedly are moving) their online servers for this game.
No. 1 the DLC. Activision released this statment:
"The Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Downloadable Content was a limited time offer, expiring on December 31, 2009."
What this means is that their DLC packs featuring Juggernaut, Psylocke, Magneto, Carnage, Black Panther, and Cable are no longer available.
What's worse is that people who have downloaded these characters before will not be able to join you online because you would need a patch downloaded by Activision to join their missions, however Activision has also removed that patch which they do not host anymore.
So whoever buys the game now, cannot only download the extra characters mentioned above, they cannot also play alongside players who already own them.
To add insult to injury, Activision added Xbox 360 Achievements and PS3 Trophy Support for the 6 characters above, but since you won't be able to download those characters, you will be stuck at 1000 out of a possible 1250 achievement fulfillment.
However, Activision's statement above was also a lie. The DLC mentioned above was released in November of 2009. Activision released this statement on January 6th, a whole week AFTER the service had already been canceled. Meaning, there was no consumer warning about this at all for their loyal fans. Also, the content was removed at least a week before the 12-31-2009 date they stated. I checked on 12-26-2009 after I had received some points for Christmas the day before, and it was no longer there. Some people on Activision's message boards have said that it wasn't already available even before Christmas.
The online servers are currently down but said to be temporary as they are trying to move it to another server. With what's been going on right now, I wouldn't be surprised if Activision just continues to axe its fans, and this too was just later canceled.
Activision has dropped the ball on this game big time. Just Google this mess, and you will see for yourself.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
