Armored Core: For Answer Review

Armored Core: For Answer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've seen the Armored Core series before and heard bad things about Armored Core 4, but I wanted to give Armored Core 4A a try anyway since it sounded like they made your mechs more configurable and the gameplay more fun. I can't compare to the previous ones since I haven't seen them, but my hunch is they succeeded.
The game is fun and supports a variety of play styles (missiles or guns? Heavy or light?) with a wide variety of parts. There are even quite a bit of blades for melee combat and some ECM and counter-ECM gear. Configuration is fun and a huge part of the game.
The game features many large enemies such as naval vessels and quite a few huge arms forts. These forts are gargantuan in size and really fun to fight since they give you something to unleash loads of ordinance on that doesn't dodge out of the way rapidly and can blow you away with its immense firepower.
Although this is apparently a staple of the series, I didn't like the fact that I was limited to firing only three weapons at a time (left, right, and shoulder mounted weapons). You can swap between your arm weapons and back mounted weapons, but you can't fire your arm and back weapons simultaneously. This made me feel that perhaps the people who designed these awesome robots never thought of the idea that someone might want to actually fire everything.
I guess my last mech game was MechWarrior so I'm spoiled that way. Another staple of the MechWarrior series missing in Armored Core is the first person cockpit view. It seems like it'd be very easy to add (just move the camera forward a bit and hide your mech. Maybe add a crosshair), but you're limited to a third person view.
The parts have reams and reams of statistics associated with them, so designing a mech is not exactly simple, but this added to the richness of the game for me. I would have liked to have more money to spend early on so I'd have a little more variety in the parts I could stick on my mech when going up against a tricky mission.
Bottom line: Good game, lets you blow stuff up, supports a variety of styles of play, and seems to be an improvement from what I've seen of the series. I recommend this if you're into mechs or things that go boom.

America's Army True Soldiers Review

America's Army True Soldiers
Average Reviews:

ok first let me start off by saying that I am actually a soldier so I had mixed feelings going into this game. If you have played the one for PC you would know why.
I will say this though, i am pleasantly suprised. The game has great graphics and it is not like a lot of those other shooters out there where they just run and gun. You have a squad you have teammates-use them and dont let them get hurt. I found myself havig a couple of hours turn into a day of training and wargames. which are not easy. You dont just shoot. You breathe you aim all the things that regular shooters dont usually take into consideration.
there are a couple of quirks but then again I know why they were put in there. I.E. Look at your soldiers uniforms. Thats all i will say.
controls are good not perfect but they are damn good. once in a while you may miss what you thought was dead on but thats because you( the soldier) breathed when you fired or you moved. such a little thing will throw your aim off by a lot.
If you looking for a run and gun shooter... this aint it. THis one takes patience which a lot of people do not have.

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection Review

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Do yourself a favor and pick this up. The new tables and HD textures make it worth the upgrade from the earlier PS2 and Wii release.
The physics are perfect (as they were before), and the new tables easily make it worth the budget asking price. I encourage anyone who wants to see more of this immediately buy it to support the developer.
The three new tables are all modern titles which make them very accessible. They are Arabian Nights, Medieval Madness, No Good Gofers like Amazon states. For some reason there seems to be some discrepancy between the few reviews that are online. Arabian Nights and Medieval Madness are especially good.
The HD textures are beautiful, even on my older SDTV with composite cables. Full screen (4x3) is supported as well. It's a notable improvement from the PS2 release.
The controls are straightforward. The left and right triggers are the bumpers. You pull the right analog stick back to launch the plunger and the left analog nudges the table.
If you're curious about the music it's the same cheesy set of tunes the PS2 release had. Thankfully you can turn it off and listen to a custom soundtrack on the 360 version. Otherwise you'll be rocking out to some bad synth and wanna-be metal tunes.
A welcome addition is the online leader board. This greatly improves the replay value. I was able to rank in Funhouse after only a few plays.
The price on Amazon is a steal. I bought it locally at a higher price because I've been waiting anxiously for its release ever since it was announced.

Amped 3 Review

Amped 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Amped 3 is the first snowboarding game to come out for the XBox 360. You get to fly through the snowy slopes in full wide screen high definition.
First, it's important to fully accept that this game is made very tongue in cheek. You get cut scenes with drawings almost exactly like Trogdor, you have sequences of 60s-style circles with good/evil George Harrisons urging you on. You get modern alt music mixed in with Blinded By the Light. Sometimes there are Wonder Woman style flashing lights. "The Dueling Serpents of Fangar!"
A lot of the references might go right by people who aren't both classic TV watchers and new website visitors. It's amazing how many subtle funny things are built into the dialogues and cut scenes.
But back to the game. You customize your character - male or female - with the typical array of skin color, body build, hair, facial hair, hat, clothing, board and so on. You have a GIANT mountain to explore that you can explore, do challenges on, follow the storyline on, and just have fun. If you get tired of tracking down cool places to board, you can always snowmobile all over to find a new hidden spot.
Like any game, the key here is to master the controls. Once you get the hang of the different moves, you'll be carving, spinning and sliding whereever you want to go. Dodge in the trees. Launch out over the rocks. The mountain is fully rendered and waits for you. The game is pretty forgiving for beginners, so they don't get frustrated, but also provides enough challenges that skilled boarders will find their ways to have fun.
The graphics in widescren high def are a mixed bag. On one hand, I love the groomed rippled snow and the trails you leave in it. It made me want to put aside the controller and drive up to the ski lifts. The funky stars and circles and other indicators are all true to style. The clouds and sunsets in the background are photo-realistic and lovely. However, the character models are a little plastic looking. Comapred to other games we're playing right now, they weren't up to standards.
It's important to note that the game is about fun - not about training you to be a professional snowboarder. If you slam into a tree, you don't get hauled off to the emergency room. You just bounce off and keep going. If you take a nose dive you just roll and get back up again. I don't really consider this a bad thing in a video game.
Well recommended for snow bunnies everywhere!

Sure, there's an all-new physics engine, an innovative artificial intelligence engine, and perfected controls, so you get the most authentic riding experience at some of the world's greatest winter resorts, but snow-boarding is all about style. That's why Amped 3 offers incredible customization, a fat helping of boarding culture, and deep, wide sandboxes loaded with killer gameplay.

BAJA: Edge of Control Review

BAJA: Edge of Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first have to start off by addressing those that have complained about the controls and handling on this game. These gamers obviously have no clue what happens to a truck, suv, or 4x4's on the rough off road terrain. The creators did an excellent job on taking real life events, and tranferring it to the next-gen video games. The handling and controls represent also exactly what would happen to a truck racing at those speeds over uneven terrain. So honestly, it you really aren't into four wheeling, or off roading, then you wont appreciate this game at all... That's like me purchasing a WWE video game when I'm not into wrestling at all, and then post a bad review on the moves!
Any dirt riding junkie will apprecite this game for what it is, the graphics aren't the best that we've seen on a racing game, but you can't put the bar too high for THQ. However, that isn't stating that the graphics are bad neither, I am very statisfied with the games presentation and physics. They have a wide range of trucks, and 4x4's to choose from, and they did a wonderful job in creating the enviroments.
Being that the game is a hard item to pick up used at any gamestop, I definitely recommend buying this new, it's something you wont regret, but only if you truly understand off roading. Those that complain about the controls and handling, and wine about how hard it is to finish a race or stay on the road. Stick to the pavement stable boys! Leave the hard tarrain of dirt, mud, hills, and jumps to those that know what to do with it.
Baja Racing: Edge of control is not wasted money for the off road fan!

Forza Motorsport 3 Review

Forza Motorsport 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's often said the the third time's the charm, and in the case of Forza Motorsport 3, that couldn't be more true. FM3 manages to improve upon it's predecessors in almost every imaginable way. If you've played Forza Motorsport 2, you're probably aware that the game wasn't designed with casual gamers in mind. FM3 changes this, and finally brings the franchise to a level that it has appeal not only as an uber-realistic racing simulator, but also as an entertaining racing game that just about anyone can pick up and enjoy. The addition of autobraking and rewind undoubtedly make things easier on newcomers, while the tweaked physics engine and ramped-up AI will give even the most die-hard Forza fanatics a run for their money. With over 400+ cars and 100+ tracks, one would be hard-pressed to get bored with this game.
Without a doubt, the two most significant improvements are the graphics and the new "Storefront". Forza Motorsport 3 displays in a native 720p (upscaled to 1080p by the console) running at 60 fps. This translates to a rich, detailed, and smooth-flowing picture that makes you feel like you're actually racing in Le Mans. To further immerse gamers, Turn 10 added a true in-cockpit view that was rendered to be a perfect likeness of the real life car. The environment and tracks weren't spared from this graphic overhaul either, and I often found myself going on free rides just to scope out the scenery and enjoy the ride.
Glossy graphics aside, the "meat" of the game is still incredibly satisfying. Those who were avid players of FM2 can testify to the integral part that online activities played. Don't worry, as Turn 10 was obviously aware this and made sure to spice things up just for you. Painting cars, applying vinyls and decals, and selling customized cars in FM3 couldn't be easier. In fact, this practice is encouraged with the addition of the new "Storefront". Players now have the ability to sell not only liveries for cars, but also tuning configurations. Making a name for yourself as an artist in Forza Motorsport 3 is a definite goal for some, but even those who lack the finesse required to create liveries can benefit from the changes.
Overall, this game not only meets all expectations set forth by hardcore FM2, but exceeds them. Those of you who are looking for a fun and relaxed racing game won't be disappointed though, as Forza Motorsport 3 was also designed with you in mind. I would, without a doubt, recommend the purchase of this game. The only downside is that the game comes with two disks (and a total of 1.9 GB of data) and necessitates the use of a hard drive if you plan on adding the bonus content (100+ cars and 3 environments).

(UPDATE - November 4, 2009) - Numerous reviews have been posted addressing the shortcomings concerning the online multiplayer mode. They are correct. Turn 10 absolutely perfected the single player aspect of this game with "Season Mode" but, upon playing a few hours in the online multiplayer mode (which, due to all the waiting, is only two or three races) a glaring flaw reveals itself- Turn 10's "reset" of the new matchmaking system sucks. A lot. Gone are the days of creating your own custom party. Gone are the days of racing sub-A class cars. Gone are the glory days of online multiplayer.
While this may not be a huge deal to me (I mostly play single-player anyways), it's definitely a problem that NEEDS to be addressed. I've also noticed some problems in single player mode..* Some in-car views aren't interactive, or don't render correctly.
* While the sound of cars has been vastly improved, there are still some problems. It seems that the exhaust note is based solely on displacement of the engine. A Camaro shouldn't sound like a Murcielago.
* Uploading the "Movies" doesn't work unless they're shot in low-res. 720p videos just don't upload.
* The "Performance Index" is broken. A Dodge Ram with a PI of 700 should, logically, perform on par with a Lamborghini Reventon with a PI of 700, right? Well, that's not how it works. I don't know how the PI is calculated, but it's not right.
* The resolution of Photomode leaves alot to be desired. While it's understandable that there needs to be a limit on file size to relieve strain on Turn 10's servers, I feel that the quality of the pictures doesn't do the game justice.
* Everything sold in the Storefront has a price cap of 10,000 credits. While this is just temporary, it's a huge disincentive at to spend hours upon hours perfecting a quality livery to be sold.
* The AI occasionally does stupid things. Though it's rare, I've seen opponents slam on their brakes for no reason when they're in the lead, slam into walls, or just stop driving. I don't know if these are just glitches, or the AI trying to be "more human". Whatever the cause, it's not right.MY ratings so far-

Greg Hastings' Paintball 2 Review

Greg Hastings' Paintball 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
***Before I begin, full disclosure: I'm featured as a character in this game, as my team (the Philly Paintball Group) was one of many selected to be in this game. I'll try to review this game as honestly as possible, however. I'm roughly 2/3 of the way through the game, so if the last 1/3 radically changes my opinion I'll edit the review.***
Paintball is sort of like a real-life video game, but up to this point it has not translated well to the current generation of consoles. Enter Greg Hastings' Paintball 2, the sequel to a cult hit on the original Xbox. While not one of the production quality of, say, Mass Effect 2 or Halo: Reach, the game is fundamentally sound and does a pretty good job of translating the paintball experience to a video game (as much as possible, at any rate - there really is not substitute for reality in this case).
The game features three career tracks, which can be completed concurrently and in any order: Speedball (paintball played on small fields with man-made bunkers), Woodsball (played on large fields, usually with special ojectives) and Recreational Paintball or "Recball," which is sort of a grab bag of paintball styles.
The player starts out as a protege of Greg Hastings, the game's namesake and arguably the best paintball player in the world, who proceeds to send them around the country to various tournaments. At the beginning of the game, the player forms a team from a limited selection of rookie players and low-end equipment, but each event unlocks more players and equipment and gives cash to purchase them. Unlike other games I've seen, the equipment is varied, and it makes a big difference here which qualities you pick (for example, would you sacrifice accuracy for better range, or for more shots per tank, or for a higher firing rate?).
One really nice touch about the game is that it uses reality - every single player in the game is a real-life part of a real-life team. The fields are digital reproductions of real fields, ranging from the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania to the beaches of Hawaii. You sometimes even go overseas.
As a shooter, your "missions" will always be some variant of defeating the opposing team, but GHP2 keeps it pretty fresh with about a half-dozen game types (the standard elimination and capture the flag options are included, of course) and a wide selection of maps. The speedball fields play fairly similar (for obvious reasons), but the others are varied enough to warrant different tactics.
The game does have a few issues. First and foremost, people used to playing first- or third-person shooters may find the controls awkward, as I did. Some functions usually mapped to the triggers or bumpers are instead mapped to the ABXY buttons, and vice versa, and the joystick-click functions tend to be finicky.
The game tends to be really easy at the beginning of all three tracks and then hit you - usually around the 4th or 5th event - with a severe jump in difficulty. It wouldn't normally be so frustrating, but your teammates' AI is directly linked to "skills" you purchase. These skills (or players that come pre-loaded with them) are prohibitively expensive (or, in the case of players, expensive AND scarce) in the early stages of the game. This makes passing these middle stages a sort of hit-or-miss, trial-and-error affair, at least until you can buy three or four skilled players. Also, the command system is pretty simplistic ("go to," "suppress," "defend"), but learning to use it effectively will somewhat mitigate the iffy AI.
The last Greg Hastings game had a breakout manager to plan the initial seconds of the game; I would have liked to see an evolution of that here rather than the given and limited fixed-option planner (balanced, heavy left/center/right, defensive).
The graphics aren't top-of-the-line; they resemble the higher-end original Xbox titles, but are on the middle-low range for the 360. On the plus side, this cuts load times to next to nil, and I have yet to have a hiccup of any kind in gameplay.
Achievement-wise, the game sports the standard 1000G, with a good chunk of points for beating each of the tracks and a smattering of 20-50 point awards for a few random feats. People who like earning achievements would be well-served to check out the list before playing, as some require very specific criteria.
All in all, the game is built on a great concept, but the execution is squarely average. It's fun to play, but you're always aware of the game's limits. Anyone who is a fan of paintball or is looking for a shooter not rated "M" should give this a look.
