Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Review

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

I have read some of the other reviews listed and we all seem to have the same thing in common. We enjoy the gameplay, however the overall game falls severely short. I'm not going to go into everything I liked about the game, however I feel the need to list some of the shortcomings.
Maybe it's nitpicking, but none of the cinematics shown in the commercials or the original trailer are part of the game. It might not be huge, but that was what got me so excited to purchase the game in the first place. Apart from that, the game is cut severely short. I have seen reviews showing 7 - 9 hours of gameplay, however I work at night and take care of my newborn during the day. I get between 1 and 2 hours of "me time" to sit and enjoy my xbox. I started the game on Wednesday and finished on Thursday. At most, a good 4 hours. I was shocked that the game ended when it did, during the "final" battle, I actually thought it was the mid point and very disappointed when I realized it was already over.
Don't get me wrong, I did love the gameplay, graphics and sound, but someone definitely dropped the ball when it came to content. If you are going to buy this, make sure you either wait for a price drop or use a promotional credit from other games to offset the cost...

Two Worlds 2 Review

Two Worlds 2
Average Reviews:

I wasn't expecting too much from this game. I personally was not a big fan of Oblivion. I tried to be, but there were aspects of the game that really bothered me such as all the monster leveling up with you. Having said that, I still bought this game hoping it would entertain me. For the first two hours, I really was not impressed. I did not like the character models, the way they moved, and I didn't like the voice acting. But I decided to give it a longer chance because I read someone say it took them an hour to get into it.
I am so happy I did. I love this game. Absolutely love it. I like it much better than Oblivion. I enjoy the combat much more as it feels more hack and slash. I like the fact that certain monsters will kill you with one or two blows. I have 9 1/2 hours logged into this game, and there is so much to do. The horse is difficult until you get used to it, once you do it is no problem. Remember that if you buy it and hate the horse.
For me, this game reminds me of an improved Diablo with the fighting, rapid looting, selling equipment, spells. If you ignore the voice acting which becomes easy to do as the game progresses, you will find yourself immersed in this game wanting to play more, to make your character stronger, and to make your weapons and armor stronger. There are graphical glitches, you definitely should load it onto your harddrive, and there are minor bugs here and there but they do not reduce the amount of fun this game is. As everyone else has stated, map is huge and there are so many side quests to do. Even though the voice acting is poor, the dialog is great and the characters have believable quests for you to do which makes them that much more enjoyable. I have played World of Warcraft, Oblivion, Sacred II, and I like the quests much more on this game than those. These quests actually have a bit of thought into them, instead of just making you "kill that guy because he has wronged me." Instead, you will hear him talk to you and tell you (and I am somewhat telling one of the quests but changing it a bit)"I want you to take care of this guy. By take care of this guy, you know what I mean. The reason I want you to deal with this is because when the Orc war was going on, he offered safe passage to my family in exchange for 500 gold. We paid him. On the day we were supposed to meet him, he disappeared. We knew the route of the passage, so we went. Little did we know he had led us straight into an ambush. It seems that is his way of making money..." and there would be more but you get the picture. It gives you an actual reason to want to do the quest instead of simple two line words that scroll across the screen. Anyhow, great game. I am glad I bought it.
I forgot to mention, so I will just throw it in here. If you like Rockband you may appreciate one part of this game. If you choose to, you can play musical instruments to earn money from people. To play an instrument, you need to buy one and you need to buy the music sheet. Each music sheet is different. To play, you have to use your controller and use both trigger buttons and both bumper buttons. Just like Rockband or Guitar Hero, the notes scroll down the screen and you have to hit the trigger or bumper when it passes the bar. But, it's hard. They scroll so fast. I would compare it to Expert on Rockband. But if you are good you'll enjoy it.
Edit: I am addicted to this game. Been looking for so long for a game to get addicted to and this one has done it. If you have been addicted to a game in the past but just couldn't find one - give this one a shot.

This sticker is near impossible to apply to the controller accurately. After roughly an hour we ended up having to make small cuts in it a razor blade to get the folds out of it. It's one solid piece that seems to go crooked no matter how you apply it. Thought it was one of those static-cling or re-usable skins, however, it's just a giant sticker. While it IS thick and seems like it'd be heavy-duty, getting it on is enough reason to pick any other company's product.

Battlefield 2 Modern Combat Review

Battlefield 2 Modern Combat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A candid game that I must admit has excellent online play that can equally compete with the grand daddy of FPS's on PC; Counterstrike. It even does a nice job at going head to head with Halo 2 but it still has some things to be desired.
PRO's
+Fantastic Graphics
+Good Controls
+Diverse Campaign mode
+Thrilling Online play
+Easy to learn controls
CON's
-Not many game variants availible online
-Varying load times that can take quite awhile
-Uneven teams constantly
-Daunting maps that give one side the leading edge
-Vehicle controls are clunky
-Air vehicles control difficultly and near impossible to destroy online.

Carnival Games: Monkey See Monkey Do Review

Carnival Games: Monkey See Monkey Do
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I was a lot younger I loved going to the carnival that visited my area once every year. This game is very entertaining and a million times cheaper than actually going to a carnival. I have 2 children (13 & 8)and they absolutely love this game. I also enjoy this game as it allows us to spend quality family ime together and is great for parties. KINECT has made all the board games in our house practically irrelevant. When we have family get togethers people automatically gravitate towards the KINECT. IN DEPTH REVIEW and our favorite carnival games.
Our favorites are:
* Knockout Punch against a heavy bag that fights back - Extremely challenging to earn the highest scores but non-stop fun.
* You twist your body inCrash Test Dummy to control everything - GREAT WORKOUT
* Leap into a space-age journey in Rocket to MarS - Kids really loved this one
* Catch coins while roller-coasting down Gold Rush Mountain - Similar to kinect adventures game but with more depth and amazing prizes!!!
Of course you get to play all of these games as your Xbox Avatar like most KINECT games.
The icing on the cake is that tickets earned in games can be redeemed to acquire a wide variety of outfits including Ninja, Swashbuckler, Viking and Wild West costumes.
Overall this game has been oodles of fun for everyone and I believe we will get quite a lot of play time out of this title. Fantastic experience, well designed and implemented KINECT controls, limitless entertainment.

250GB Hard Drive for Xbox 360 (Generic) Review

250GB Hard Drive for Xbox 360 (Generic)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok the 250 (generic) or any other generic HDD works great...BUT it WILL NOT PLAY ORIGINAL XBOX TITLES. But there is a fix. Go to link [...] or google xbox-scene.com and look up the thread "Xbox games dont work selfmade HDD problem" and follow the instructions. I had to do some serious digging to find this out. You will need a transfer cable to hook up to your computer in order to restore partition 2. The program used is "Xplorer360 Extreme2" you must run the program as computer administrator. The Generic HDD's are missing a working partition 2 file which is basically the original XBOX emulator and will not work until you do this. Otherwise this hard drive will only play 360 titles. Its a pretty easy fix but it still sucks you have to bother doing all this. it was hard for me to find the proper info to fix the problem so I hope my review here will at least help people that buy this HDD fix the problem a little easier.

Michael Jackson The Experience Review

Michael Jackson The Experience
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I held off on the Wii version to get this for the Kinect. Major disappointment. I'm a Dance Central fan and couldn't wait for this game to come out.
I got release day delivery, and practically raced home from work eager to try out the MJ game. First song I picked was Smooth Criminal....the dancing was so-so, but I thought- surely it must be because I'm doing it on the easiest level....replayed the song in Performance mode....same moves, now singing was added to the mix. Not the Michael Jackson workout I'd hoped for....
Pros:
All your favorite songs
Great stages (this is one area where I'm glad I got the Kinect version)
Really hard to get a dance move wrong
the kinect captures your movements and clothing to reflect it on your on-screen liquid avatar (think Your Shape in true color)
Cons:
Hardly any dancing
Hardly any dancing
Where's the dancing?
Dancing?
Did they forget to add dancing?
Oh, and you can't turn off the singing modeIf you're hoping for an exercise/dance game, then this is going to disappoint. If you're looking for some relaxed, karaoke night, beer drinking game play-- then this might fit the bill.
***Update 4-17-11****Giving Kinect and extra star******
I went out and bought the PS3 version and gained a different reference point to review the Kinect version. The PS3 version is great for a workout, not as fun or natural as Dance Central on Kinect...or even as MJ Experience Kinect, but it's definitely a workout. Seeing the leg work on the PS3 version (which only tracks your right hand), if they had replicated this on the Kinect version, 90% of players would've been alienated because most of us are incapable of even [remotely] replicating the King of Pop's dance moves...much less for an hour or two of gameplay.
To keep the Kinect version family-friendly and all-ages friendly, I imagine that the lengthy pauses and poses throughout the songs are to give novice users a chance to catch their breath and to gain some easy points so they don't feel completely defeated on every song. The MJ Experience for Kinect is still NOT a good 'workout' game, but it's a slower, fun game that you can play with the family. By that same token, that's what levels are for-- give the majority of us the simpler dance moves- and make an 'Impossible' level for those that have mastered MJ's dancing.
In summary:
Kinect Version:
*Some of the songs are all singing and no dancing
*The dancing is ok, but for the most part is slower, and there are a LOT of pauses between dancing and poses that you have to hold for 5 seconds- so don't plan on getting your heart rate up
*Much more natural feeling than the Wii and PS3 versions
*The stages and backgrounds blow the PS3 version's away (it would be nice to be able to switch your on-screen avatar to your Xbox avatar, but if you're trying to learn how to master the moves correctly, then it is helpful to have your 'liquid reflection' on the stage)
*You can't turn the singing off, and if you live in an apartment and don't feel like embarrassing yourself in front of the neighbors, then don't plan on getting a decent singing score (or achievements)
*If they had 'dumbed down' MJ's dance moves to match more closely with the Dance Central experience, most of us MJ fans would've been in an uproar and the game couldn't be called the MJ Experience...PS3 Version:
*You'll get your heart rate up
*You can pretty much suck at the leg work as long as you have your arm in the right place at the right time
*Fun, engaging, you get to be MJ's backup dancer
*Much more dancing, less singing, this could definitely be a workout game contender
*You'll get tired of the remote in your hand and wish you were playing the Kinect again
All in all, if you want exercise-- get the Wii or PS3 version. If you want some slower fun, want to master some difficult dance moves with more precision, want a beer-drinking karaoke/dance game, or enjoy the Kinect and all it can do-- then go for this version. If you're looking to add an exercise routine to your game mix-- then opt for the Wii or PS3 versions.

Lost Planet 2 Review

Lost Planet 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you see critic reviews all but outright lashing at the game to fan reviews saying it's a ton of fun and not worth the amount of negativity thrown at it, you can see that this is clearly a game that has a "try out and see" approach. Not to say Capcom has had completely flawless run-ins with the press lately. Devil May Cry 4 had a great first half only to be marred by the entire first half literally played backwards by a different character. Or the really stellar Resident Evil 5 that everyone complained was exactly like Resident Evil 4 when other games are just like prior entries too. So when one hears of oddball game mechanics and approaches to their games in the reviews, you might be a bit hesitant to give Lost Planet 2 a try but this is a game where the reviewers are right in saying this isn't completely flawless but the low scores and negativity thrown at it seems a bit overdone and the best way to gauge whether this game is for you is just play it and see what you think. Stunning graphics, some great score and some of the biggest bosses you'll ever come across also comes with some screwy controls, a near pointless plot and not to mention a game that seems programmed specifically for co-op and you got the makings of a great game that's only good and worth playing but man, if only somebody looked at the bigger picture and said "hey, wait a minute....what if we were to change...?"
Story: The story takes place on the planet E.D.N. III, a once-frozen planet completely covered in snow now largely changed in the 10 years since the adventures of Wayne and Co. in the first game. Instead of having one character go through the game chapter-hopping, they all involve different groups with different objectives that will come to a head near the end. What this means is that the story feels slightly inconsequential since you control nameless dudes who are trying to do something you're not quite sure yet against people you're not introduced to. However this also means some diversity in locations so you can hop from frozen tundras to thick jungles to deserts and back which makes up for the repetitive-but-pretty all snow environments of the first game.
Graphics: Complain all you want about the games of Capcom but you can't argue against their graphic-making abilities which are pretty stellar. From Resident Evil 5 to Street Fighter IV to this, this company knows how to make some really impressive looking games and this game is no different. From the locales you'll see to the absolutely enormous bosses, the MT Framework engine that powers the game is quite a powerful one indeed. However there is some slowdown when things go boom a bit too big and on the train level which I'll get into later, I literally ran into a glitch where the shells required to load into the gun's cannon were floating in mid-air. But from a look standpoint, Lost Planet 2 certainly has the chops but it's not quite 100% smooth but it looks damn fine trying to get there.
Sound/Music: When things aren't exploding so loudly that it completely drowns it out, the music in the game is appropriately epic, intense and nicely bombastic. Things get exciting really quickly and the music used reflects it and that main menu music which you'll be hearing a lot of, I'm sure, is catchy but not so it becomes grating after the 105th damn time. Sound effects are also nicely made from the screeches and roars of the Akrid to the gunfire of the different weaponry, this is a game for your surround sound system or some great headphones. The same can't be said for the voice acting which feels appropriately Capcom. Not as much emotion and dialogue choices read exactly as you'd expect them to: almost flat. Occasionally they'll do some good work in other games but it just feels really iffy here.
Gameplay: Unlike games like say Halo 3, Borderlands, or Gears of War which can be played single player but the main bulk of fun comes in co-op, Lost Planet 2 in a way feels like it was designed specifically to be played with more than one person. And when you see the near brain-dead AI of your squadmates, it's easy to see why you need extra players. They barely shoot and half the time they stand there while you're running around trying to do the bulk of the work which makes the campaign feel really average but then you have some buddies and everything makes sense. Tactics come into play, players can be relegated to a specific weapon usage or task and strategies can be made more efficiently. Take for example Chapter 3-3 (the chapter nearly every reviewer has complained about, dubbing it the "train level"). In this chapter, you start off on a train traveling parallel to an enemy train so you can have one guy with a sniper rifle shooting guys from afar, one with a rocket launcher blowing up the turrets and enemy air support while a 3rd can carry a shield to soak up some damage and keep your other guys safe. Then there's the boss fight in which a huge sense of roles and tasks have to be laid out to each member: you're on a cannon which needs to be fired at weak points of probably the biggest boss you've ever seen. Those shells need to be loaded into the chamber, energized for quicker reloading and potentially given some help with a console that allows for quicker gun rotation. This is not done automatically and whoever is shooting has to rely on the other 3 to supply the shells, load them, energize them and help the rotation speed of the barrel or you're dead. And what if you take damage? Then you need someone to go below decks and activate the coolant systems which act as damage repairmen and gun cooldown. Not to mention there's gun turrets somebody can climb into to shoot down giant meteors or help shooting at the weak points. Think the AI will do all that on its own? Think again.
But this co-op has some side effects. The game operates on a lobby system where you can find a game for a specific episode within a specific chapter and hope one of them says "standing by" because that means they're in the menus and haven't started yet. If their status is "playing" however, you have to wait till they're done before you can come in as there's no join in progress or drop in/drop out co-op in the game. Also co-op can have slight frustrations involving the Battle Gauge. When you activate data posts or accomplish objectives, you add some points to a battle gauge but points get deducted if someone dies. So nearly every death can be treated as a surefire way to get people to yell at you since you're the one who keeps dying and getting your whole team closer to a mission failure. As far as the competitive multiplayer is concerned, it's fun but some issues from campaign carry over. Getting shot puts you in a stun animation, leaving you unable to fire back, heal or do much of anything except rolling or hopefully throwing a grenade which kills the other player first. Unlike games like Call of Duty or Halo where one-on-ones were won by skill and accuracy and which gun you brought, this game feels more like ambush tactics: surprise attack someone and shoot them first before they can do anything. Also nearly every mode has what you'll be doing a lot of in the campaign which is dealing with data posts. In both campaign and multiplayer, these data posts act like spawn points but unlike other games where standing in the area started the capturing, you have to mash B against the data post which leaves you completely vulnerable to weaponry and grenades. This can of course allow players to wait till you try to activate it then kill you while you're completely defenseless. But the modes and gameplay are rarely seen in multiplayer now which makes it quite unique to other games where it's mainly FPS and somewhat familiar.
Another gripe is how you unlock things. In a lot of multiplayer games, unlocks came through level progression: more you played, better toys you got to tinker with. In Lost Planet 2 on the other hand, some of that is unlocks while others have to be literally won from a slot machine. The more you collect those "?" boxes in campaign, the more points you add to your total which act as your "quarters" for the slot machine where you can win new weaponry, abilities that can alter how your character can behave in combat but mainly you'll be seeing emotes and "noms de guerre", in other words, nicknames. Emotes are done by pressing the Start button and either any D-pad direction or the shoulder buttons and they're strictly poses whereas noms de guerres are kind of like your callsigns but when you're being bested by players that have better weaponry or better abilities than you in multiplayer, it can be frustrating when all you keep unlocking are names.
That being said, the gunfights and Akrid encounters can be incredibly intense, the multiplayer from the first game had a very strong community and that'll no doubt be translated here and the game's achievements and trophies feel designed to do one thing: make you play the game over and over. Level up the different factions to level 99, kill an insane amount of enemies, collect everything from the slot machine and play the chapters a whole bunch. This is one of the longest 1000/Platinums you'll find. The game is certainly not without its faults but avoiding the game altogether isn't really the way to go about it. Unless you're a diehard fan of the first or loved the demos in which case you most likely already played it or about to, give the game a try since everyone will react differently. Some of you will love it so much you won't mind playing the game for the next year or more while some others will think it's just way too flawed and backwards and not worth your trouble. I like it and I'd recommend but keep in mind this is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of game so I'm in the former camp so just have to see which camp you fall into.

Story Lost Planet 2, offers deeper insight into the world of E.D.N III,the fictional NEVEC (Neo-Venus Construction) Corporation's attempt to controlthe flow of Thermal Energy (T-ENG), that is the key to survival on the harshplanet, and the uncertain fate of mankind as they battle the huge insectcreatures known as Akrid. A decade has passed since the events of the firstgame, and the face of E.D.N. III has changed dramatically. Terraformingefforts have been successful and the ice has begun to melt, giving way tolush tropical jungles and harsh unforgiving deserts. Players will enterthis new environment and follow the exploits of their own customized snowpirate on their quest to seize control of the changing planet. Gameplay Lost Planet 2, like the original game in the series, is a third-person shooter featuring huge boss battles, challenging terrain and the ability to pop in and out of battle mechs, known in-game as Vital Suits. The primary difference in gameplay this time around hinges on the inclusion of RPG gameplay elements. Players can now customize many of the aspects of their playable snow pirate, including his physical attributes, clothing and to a certain extent, weaponry and gestures. Players will control these customized heroes across 6 interconnected episodes, creating a truly unique and interactive experience that changes depending upon the actions of the players involved. With this concept, players will have the opportunity to engage in the story in a much more dynamic way as plot threads evolve from different players' perspectives. Multiplayer Beyond the deep single player mode, Lost Planet 2 is loaded with extensive multiplayer modes and play options. This includes 16-player online versus action, as well as a 4-player online co-op support and two-player split-screen functionality in local co-op play. In addition, the intense and action packed campaign mode allows for 4-player online co-op play to clear mission objectives with friends, unlockable weapons and the ability to resurrect fallen comrades. Weaponry and Gadgets No action game would be complete without an arsenal of weaponry, and to that end Lost Planet 2 comes loaded with a huge variety of hardware for players to unleash on unsuspecting enemies. Machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, lasers, sniper rifles, grenades and a host of other weapons are scattered across the game. However, Lost Planet 2's biggest weapons come on two legs: the heavily armed and armored robotic Vital Suits return in greater numbers and variety than the first game. There are Vital Suits that transform into other vehicles, and even some that hold up to three players and take multiple players to operate. Also, the grappling hooks that made the gameplay in Lost Planet a true 3D experience are back, allowing gamers to gain tactical advantage by quickly scaling buildings. Key Features
4-player Co-op Action - Team up to battle the giant Akrid in explosive 4-player cooperative play. Teamwork is the player's key to victory as team members are dependent on each other to succeed and survive.
Split-screen Functionality - Share your Lost Planet 2 adventure with a friend locally with split-screen co-op play.
Exclusive Characters - Xbox 360 players get the added experience of the inclusion of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago from the Gears of War games into the world of Lost Planet 2.

WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011 Review

WWE Smackdown 2011 is disappointing for a number of reasons. The biggest reason is that THQ has somehow, in their infinite wisdom, decided to remove over 250 MOVES from the game!!! This is inexcusable. WWE Smackdown 2010 has all of these moves included.
In a pro wrestling video game, other than the roster, the most important thing is the MOVES! Without moves, it isn't even a wrestling game. I devolves into a Street Fighter style "fighting" game. I cannot overstate how disappointed I am in this year's game.
If you don't think you'll miss the moves that were removed, let me assure you that you will. Among the moves missing is Chris Jericho's Lionsault, his Walls of Jericho, Triple H's signature clothesline, the Rock's signature clothesline, RVD's rolling thunder (yes he is in the game) and his split legged moonsault. Not only that but if you want to create Hulk Hogan to bring into your game - forget it. There is no leg drop finisher in the game!! Want the Ultimate Warrior? Nope, his moves are gone too. This applies for any more past and current WWE wrestlers.
You now only have four front grapples. Way down from last year. The developers said they wanted to make a game from the viewpoint of an 8 year old fan. Well, I guess they have succeeded. But along the way, they are killing the loyal fan base that made the series relevant in the 1st please. Seriously, just get WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2010 for $21.00 on Amazon.com

Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights Review

Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights
Average Reviews:

Okay, I just picked this up a couple of weeks ago for a remarkably cheap price (it's been out for awhile) and I had pretty meager expectations going in since it came and went without much hoopla. The case wasn't helped with the dumb "Hot Import Nights" subtitle which really brought thoughts of mediocrity to my head.
However, this game is amazing fun! While limited in scope and a tad repetitive, I never got bored with it. The cars handle well and you actually have to use different cars for different events, unlike most other arcade racers where a supercar will dominate all courses without much effort.
It took me about 40 hours to complete the game to 100% completion.
There is *NO* storyline to the game. No cheesy cutscenes a la Need For Speed or Midnight Club. No bosses or bad guys. Nothing. The people you race in the rookie league are the same people you're racing in the elite league. The game is focused solely on racing and drifting.
What I like:
1) The courses are well designed and easy to drive. I didn't find a single "invisible wall" which is prevalent in many racing games, where you hit some unseen obstacle on the side of the track and go bouncing off-course.
2) The difficulty level is perfect, for me at least. Most races can be beaten within 1-5 tries so you're not banging your head for hours trying to get past something.
3) Great selection of cars, from regular Japanese tuner cars to classic muscle cars to boutique supercars like the Zonda F and the Koenigsegg CCX.. even an Ascari!
4) Soundtrack is good, if you like electronic/dub.
5) Sense of speed is great, graphics are about on par with other 360 racers.
6) Drift courses are a hell of a lot of fun. Some of the drift totals seem impossible when you first get started (like 4M points in a single drift for example) but once you get into the groove you can knock it out and feel in the zone.
What I don't like:
1) There's no conclusion to the game. I'm serious. You beat the elite level and a screen says "congratulations you are now elite" and puts you back into the regular race selection screen. That's it. No credits rolling, nothing new unlocked, no new cars, nada. Just an achievement.
2) The game LOCKS UP on a somewhat often basis. In one of the drift events if I go over a 5M single drift it will hard lock, ie, I have to actually power down the 360 to get out of it. This is a pretty serious problem and there's no expectation that it will be fixed since I believe the Juice team is out of work these days. This doesn't impact the actual completion of the game but it does keep you from accomplishing some achievements, like the 20M and 50M drifts, which are probably beyond my skill level anyways. But there's a certain anger that's felt when you get a 12M point drift and it locks up before the autosave kicks in.
All in I'd give it a 7/10 and recommend it to anyone who's played all the other big name racers and is looking for something simple.
For reference I'd give these scores to these similar games:
Need For Speed Undercover: 6.5/10
Midnight Club Los Angeles: 7.5/10
Test Drive Unlimited: 9/10
Burnout Paradise: 7/10
Need For Speed Most Wanted: 8/10
Need For Speed Carbon: 7/10

Game Party: In Motion Review

Game Party: In Motion
Average Reviews:

Kinect is a very new system and finding interesting ways to use it remains a challenge. Mini game collections are in no short supply this early in the peripheral's life and at least the premise is sound. Execution is key. I think Dance Central and, to a lesser extent, Kinect Sports got it right, or perhaps right enough. Games like Sonic Free Riders demonstrated how a potentially good game can be ruined by difficult controls.
Then there's Game Party in Motion (GPiM). I'm not familiar with WB making decent games, but I nonetheless had hopes that GPiM could provide some good old fashioned entertainment. It has an impressive lineup of games including darts, horseshoes, and skee ball. The menu system/navigation went for simplicity and is fairly easy to work through once you get the hang of activating the confirm and cancel commands. To confirm, you hold your right hand around waist level without extending the arm. You can put your hand directly off to the side, a little in front of your or behind you. Cancel is the same with the left hand; if you had to extend your arm, it would conflict with the system pause, so this slightly odd position is to maintain consistency which is NOT itself a bad thing. More on that in a bit.
The tracking in the minigames ranges from passable to infuriatingly awful. In the bean bag toss, for instance, no amount of lateral throwing motion made the bags travel anywhere off of dead center and I could not for the life of me find any correlation between the speed of my throw and the distance traveled by the bag. It's just too easy to throw straight in the precision games and too hard to get the distance/power right. Games like the arcade style basketball shooting don't recognize certain throwing motions. Throwing from the waist was fine, but a standard freethrow form (hands over head) had the game prompt me to step back further even when there was no more room to do so (and using the Kinect tuner, my hands were indeed visible throughout the motion from well before that distance). Pacing is also a problem. By default, there is a countdown before your actions have influence on the game, presumably so you can get move around without accidentally throwing something. However, you can also do the gesture for Cancel to essentially pause the game, requiring a subsequent Confirm before you can start playing again. On top of that, the countdown is far too long and on certain longer games having to wait five seconds after each and every dart/throw/shot is absurd and makes every single game seem needlessly tedious.
One of the stranger behaviors of this game is use of primary hands. You have to dig through the options to find where to switch between left and right handed play, and this cannot be performed in game; if you miss it, you have to quit and try again. The game does not even try to infer which hand you are trying to play with. And this may have been deliberate. Why, you ask? GPiM does not support left handed players. Yes it lets you pick the option, but think about it for a second. What if you are trying to play one of the many games that uses an underhand throwing motion? Where is your left hand during it? That's right, it's roughly waist level from start to finish. That means a typical left-handed underhand throw is recognized by the game as Cancel, aborting the throw and requiring one to motion Confirm to give it another go.
As a lefty, this is inexcusable. Roughly half the game is impossible for me to play and the other half I still have to worry about the poor tracking and shoddy mechanics. This is easily the worst motion control I've seen on the Kinect so far (yes, worse than Sonic). This would make for a terrible iPhone game, let alone a $40 console title. Don't buy it. If you are thinking about it, close your hand in a car door instead. If you are thinking of getting it for someone else as a gift, skip it and just stab them with a sharp instrument. Repeatedly. The waiting room of the hospital will provide hours more entertainment than this pile of garbage. I suppose if you really hate someone, you can gift it to them, but stabbing is still cheaper.
