Battlefield: Bad Company Review

Battlefield: Bad Company
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I won't go into how the game performs online, in single player, etc. Others have done a fine job of that already. What I know many people want to know is if the Gold Edition is worth buying over the standard edition or not. Well, I'll try to help you decide that for yourself, but in short (and in my opinion - No).
Simply put, all you get are some videos of the multiplayer maps with some tips on how to approach each map. I had hoped for more from these videos, honestly, and I don't really think they offer much insight at all. They seem rushed more than detailed. More than likely, these will be available online somewhere if they aren't already.
You also get immediate access to five additional guns that buyers of the standard edition will need to wait until they've reached rank 25. That's cool, I guess, but not really that great of an incentive.
You also get a small fold out poster...
If you're a collector of special editions, then great - go for it. If you really don't care that much or are swaying between the two, get the regular one - this one really isn't worth the extra cash. In my case, the store I purchased the game from actually had the standard edition on sale while the GE was regular price. So I ended up paying eighteen dollars extra for these five guns, poster, and videos. In my mind, that was a poor choice. For the usual ten dollars more, I'd have been less disappointed, but still not totally satisfied.
Explanation of my star ratings: I have this edition of the game 3 stars simply because I feel the additional content wasn't worth the additional price. I gave the game itself 4 stars overall because, while I'm enjoying it a lot, it doesn't keep me as immersed as Call of Duty 4 did.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West Review

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a game that has been on my radar for some time now. Not only is it one of the only non sequel or non remakes of Q4, but it's a story driven game. The game actually has a writer who is known for such movies as The Beach and 28 Days Later. Not too shabby, especially in the video game world. So, it's to be expected that I was really excited about this game, the story buff (in video games at least) that I am. Did Enslaved live up to it's high hopes during the first few hours of gameplay or is this game destined for B game bargain bins? Read on to find out in my first impression.
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West takes place about 200 years or so after a nuclear holocaust in the United States. Vegetation is beginning to overtake structures and the world is beautiful in a despairing kind of way. You play as Monkey, a strong brute of a man who was captured by slavers and stored on a slave ship. In transit to wherever it is they were taking you, a girl breaks out of her cell and continues to sabotage the ship in her hasty attempt to get free and sets you loose. The ship is coming down and you need to make it to an escape pod. After some platforming, you eventually make it to the last escape pod, which is taken by the girl who caused the commotion. You hold on for dear life to the escape pod as she ejects and you land in a desolate NYC years after a nuclear war. Upon awaking, you find that the girl, named Trip, has fitted you with a slave headband that shocks you if you don't do her will. She can issue commands to you and you must do them for her. If she dies, you also die. So Monkey is a rough spot, but Trip isn't bad. She did this because she knows she would never get home without Monkeys brute strength. Her proposition to him, take her 300 miles to the west to her sanctuary village made by her father and she'll remove the collar. With no choice in the matter, Monkey agrees and the two set off on their Odyssey to the West.
And with that, Enslaved begins. The opening sequence is very epic and the graphics in the game are some of the best I have seen on the 360 this side of Gears of War 2. If you aren't familiar, the game is actually loosely based on Journey to the West, an old Chinese story that is apparently pretty popular in the UK due to some tv shows about it. I wasn't familiar with it until I googled it. Regardless, you don't need to know about the book to enjoy the game. They use some of the same names and try to leave subtle clues to the book, but it's really a different beast altogether.
The story so far is top notch and I'm really excited to see how Monkey and Trip make it to the west, but there are other things besides story in a game. Namely, gameplay. The gameplay is sort of reminiscent of a platformer like Prince of Persia. There's a lot of climbing and swinging, but at the same time combat plays a huge roll. You're going to be doing a lot of computer AI co-op to outsmart enemy mech's, the games most prevalent enemy. For instance, Monkey is the strength, Trip the brains. In one scenario, Monkey needs to make it across a huge area to take out an automated turret, less they be shredded to bits. So, Trip uses her armband to create an electronic diversion that draws their fire. That leaves you to circle around flank the enemy. In doing so, you rip the arm off the mech and use it to finish off the remaining turrets. But, the path you took here required a lot of jumping and swinging, something Trip can't do. You need to go back and carry her on your back across hazardous areas and throw her to places she can't jump to. At first, I thought it would be a pain in the ass, but I found I enjoy the times you have to carry her. During these times is when the next thing I loved about the game begins to shine...
The talking between the two characters is key in the game. You never know when it will start or end, but they talk a lot. It's in these times you learn the stories of the two travelers and what worlds they come from. Without spoiling anything, they come from two totally different backgrounds so relating is a little rough. Their banter is almost flirty in some regards so if you're into the chemistry between two co-op partners, you'll enjoy this portion of the game. I found it refreshing and a nice diversion. The world around them is crumbling but they have each other in rough times.
I already mentioned it but the graphics are amazing. The vistas and backdrops are truly breathtaking, especially when your ship crashes in the beginning. Take a long look at the NYC skyline and be sure to keep your jaw from hitting the floor. It's amazing and a true sight to see in a video game. Plus, this is a post apocalyptic game that isn't brown. How many games are out there that automatically equate post apocalyptic with brown, but in reality, after the fallout (if any) the world would be overtaken by nature. It's nice to see this in a game.
So far, I haven't had many complaints about the game. If I had to point out anything I'd say that maybe the gameplay could get repetitive, but that's just me trying to find gripes where none exist. There's an upgrade system that Trip performs that allows you to learn new combat options and new moves (as well as health and shields) that have the ability to keep things fresh. If you like platformers though, you already know how those games can get after a solid gaming marathon. It's something that comes with the territory, but most good platformers get around this by having varied level design, which Enslaved has in spades.
So, should you buy this game? Depends...do you like platformers that have heavy combat and some stealth scenarios? If so, I'd say yes. How about story? I'm a sucker for a good story in a game so this one was a no brainer. Enslaved could be a rent if you aren't too thrilled on the idea of platforming but be sure not to miss it. This has the possibility of being a sleeper hit of 2010. It won't compete in sales with the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games, but it's a new IP in a world of sequels and remakes. Give it a shot so we can tell the industry we want to see new games, not just sequels.

Rock Band 2 Review

Rock Band 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The prime difference between what the folks at Harmonix and the people at Neversoft/RedOctane are doing with their perspective games comes down to very important semantics. Neversoft's Guitar Hero series is a franchise. Harmonix's Rock Band is a platform. It's a huge distinction and the truth is that Rock Band's method benefits the consumers a lot more.
So when you're purchasing Rock Band 2, you'll getting a lot more value than you can imagine. Sure there's the 84 song (all master cuts) list and the 20 additional free bonus songs coming really soon, but what's important to note is the promise that Harmonix is keeping with: Rock Band is a platform, meaning every song under the Rock Band umbrella (with a few unfortunate nixes) will work with their games. So not only do all the songs you've been downloading for a year work, but also all but three songs in Rock Band 1 can be ripped to your hard drive (for a nominal $5 for licensing fees). This is a phenomenal value that values the customer more than paying for individual "expansion" packs that have no connectivity to one another. Platform versus franchise.
Alright, so there's a huge value here. But once you dig into the actual game, there's some good and some blah. Harmonix revamped the touring mode so that, regardless of playing single or multi, you have one World Tour. Previously, songs unlocked in solo play would show up in the multiplayer; here, though, regardless of whether you're playing by yourself or with friends, you're unlocking songs as you travel throughout the world. It's a lot more fun and emphasizes group play.
One of the issues I've run into is that the people I play Rock Band with aren't the best of players. We do it for fun and we'd invariably run into a brick wall in the tour where they'd have to move up to the next difficulty and couldn't. So far, we haven't run into that situation and have gotten a lot more out of touring that we used to. I hope this continues as this is the most exciting and fun aspect of the game.
Other game types have been included, as well. Your band can do the "Tour Challenge," which basically throws various set lists at you to get through. These set lists can be songs from a specific band or songs difficult on a certain instrument or songs of a certain theme, etc. A second game type is "Battle of the Bands" and puts your band against another band virtually, with a leaderboard to track your progress.
If you're looking for more character customization options, you'll probably be disappointed. There's a few more new hair types and a couple more faces, but for the most part it feels like the first Rock Band. This is a common thread throughout Rock Band 2: it feels a lot like the first Rock Band. It's more of a slow evolution. By far the best changes are ones that should have been in place the first time around, namely the fact you don't need a band leader and that you can have one character play any of the instruments. This is probably my favorite part of the new game (minus the songs).
But the songs are the real showcase. There's a lot of diversity here with a lot of new bands, some oldies and everything in between. But most of the songs are a ton of fun to play, which is the most important part. If you have Rock Band, this is a no brainer as the gameplay modes are more fun and you're not losing songs. If you're new, this is a terrific place to start. Many many hours have been logged so far and I can't wait for more.

Marble Blast Ultra Review

Marble Blast Ultra

Marble Blast Ultra is a great game for the right audience. The graphics are great, the game play is simple and entertaining, and the achievements make for some lasting enjoyment. It's a very simple game where you roll the marble around the course, and it gets a lot harder than you might think. For five dollars, it's a very well done family-friendly game that does not get old quickly. It's also great that you can download the demo first to see if you like it. With the ability to play a few levels before buying and the fact that it's only $5, you can't go wrong with Marble Blast Ultra.

Saints Row (Platinum Hits) Review

Saints Row (Platinum Hits)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Saint's Row is a game that is a blantant rip-off of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, from everything right down to the way you steal cars out from people driving them on the street. But make no mistake: This isn't some rushed piece of garbage simply set out to make money off the GTA franchise. It has a little bit of TLC put into it by the game developers, as well.
Similarities to GTA:
-You can do storyline and free roaming missions
-steal and customize cars
-participate in Turf Wars taking over neighborhoods for your gang
-customize your main character
-wield a large variety of guns
-listen to a large variety of music
-and generally play the game however way you want.
Enhancements over GTA:
-Much superior graphics
-better map
-a GPS system for your maps and vehicles
-customizable cell phone, with allies you can call for backup
-customizable music playlists (in case you get sick of the randomness of the radio stations and want to hear your music anywhere, anytime)
-the hands-down BEST car customization in any non-racing video game, ever!
-health items (food) you can access anytime
-self-regenerating health that heals up from about-to-die to full health in about one minute or so
-superior firearms (albeit none of them look very unique)
-a slightly better menu interface to access your firearms (I just wish they hadn't put the food and weapons in the same system; it gets confusing)
-the police are the most minor threat in the game
-public transportation is available to you (although you more than likely will never use it)
-if you find yourself stuck in water, you can skip having to swim to shore with the "warp" feature, which will do that for you. Pretty cool feature! Why aren't things like that in other games?
-shooting style & difficulity are fair (The shot target is in the fixed-center of the screen and you move the camera to aim, but it's a little harder to use then in GTA)
-both men, AND women, can be recruited as allies in your gang, or killed in other gangs. Hurray for murder equality!
-celebrity voice acting (I instantly recognized Mila Kunis as Tanya and Michael Rapaport as Troy)
Worse from GTA:
-No bikes or motorcycles to ride which is diaspointing
-no boats or planes either (not that they're really needed here)
-character can barely swim
-only one safehouse in the entire city/game
-clothes choices are lame and uninspired
-despite the good voice acting, the dialogue is terrible and it sounds like it was written by the whitest people on the planet (shades of "187: Ride or Die")
-an excessive overuse of cursing (if you're going to use it in every other word, it's impact and gravitas is completely lost)
-the A.I. is stupid, and the enemy gangs have that "random spawning" effect whenever you have a "wanted level" by them
-it's mandatory to do the side missions as you have to earn "respect" in order to do the main storyline missions, and respect is only gained from the side missions
-many of the side missions are hard or just plain annoying, like the later level Escort missions
-your character, although he has great stamina, has terrible running animation, and trying to shoot while running just looks retarded.
-the prices of things are way too high/too much (if you're just staring off and haven't saved up any cash, a fifty dollar hamburger may be a bit much). I'd prefer them if they kept them at "real-world" prices.
-the "humor" of the game is just weak and lacks any level of subtlety whatsoever, like the Wendy's burger chain parody, "Freckle B*tch's" for example
-the radio stations are horribly put together, and their names are awful, too.
-the music is generic and lame, and there's only a few "name brand" artists contributing to the game's soundtrack. Mainly, the Clipse and Twista.
-there's no difficulity setting and the main missions in the game are a bit too easy (while the side missions are often too hard)
-the "escape the police" method in this game is weak and lame. It's a drive-thru confessional booth, not that you'll ever really need to use it. I never even been in "Forgive and Forget" before.
-your recruited allies are complete idiots and you'll spend more time than anything reviving them because they rushed headlong into a dozen or so shooting enemies. They're more of a hassle to use than any kind of help, sort of like bringing young children along for grocery shopping.
-it's pretty easy to die in situations that don't call for it. Your health bar, despite it's regeneration, can't take much damage and a few shots from two or more enemies can take you from full health to death pretty quickly. Like, in three seconds quickly. This is darn frustrating and happens A LOT in the stupid Pushback missions that pop up randomally that you can't avoid skipping over.
-there's NO Body Armor, anywhere in this game, which only adds on to the annoying "easy to die" problem I mentioned above.
-the randomally popping up, mandatory "defend your turf against invading gangs" Pushback Missions. They were just as random and annoying in San Andreas and they're even more annoying here. What's worse is, in order to successfully defend your turf, you'll have to seek out special "lieutenants" instead of just killing everybody in sight. And these 12 or so lieutenants tend to hide out in weird, hard-to-reach places, and you'll have to make your way through dozens of enemies, risking your life, just to make your way to them. It was easier in GTA when you just had to kill everybody invading your land. Here, you'll literally be in an urban battlefield going against dozens of enemies, making your way to one of the four spots in the area your enemy lieutenats are at. (they only hang out three at a time and are scattered wide across the entire neighborhood warzone.) The worse thing about these missions are that they're more or less mandatory, and you won't have time to save whenever they pop up, and they'll pop up often after JUST completing a really hard mission or side quest. At least in San Andreas, it was fun to do these missions, partly because they were do in intervals and all you had to do is be the last man standing. Here, they're just a REALLY annoying chore.
-each gun has it's own set of bullets, making it hard to get ammo. In other games like GTA, bullets are shared between guns of similar types (universal pistol ammo, universal shotgun ammo, etc.), but here, each gun is different with it's own unique bullets in them, and you can only have one gun type (pistol, shotgun, etc.) at a time. BUT, because you can't use ammo from other guns, that you'll often find off of dead bodies, you'll constantly be having to decide whether to swap your gun that's low on ammo out for the one of a gang member you just shot. If so, you'll quickly run of of ammo for that, too. If not, you'll just have an empty gun on you. And thus, you'll be deciding which gun you have that is more fuel efficent, quite often in heavily heated turf wars or in missions with tons of enemies to kill. What's worse is every single gangster carries different random guns on them. If the Vice Kings just all had Vice pistols and the Carnales had a different pistol type they all shared, it'd be a lot simplier. But, no, every time you kill someone, it's "do I run out of ammo, or pick this up instead, even though it only has five more bullets in it than the one I already have?" Basically, you'll easily use up all the ammo for whichever gun you have and will have to replace it for another gun (which only has a few bullets in it) and back and fourth like so. (In other words: YOU'RE *ALWAYS* RUNNING OUT OF AMMO!)Overall, Saint's Row is a worthy edition to the GTA genre of video games. Although it's a rip-off, in every sense of the word, it's defintely not of inferior quality. In fact, Saint's Row is even better than most of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The game, at it's core is nice, but what really bogs it down are the minor negatives, which as you can see, really begin to add up. The game is much better than Three Stars, but all these little things keep it from being Five Star worthy. Other than the numerous minor flaws, the only problem is the story, which is pretty lame and generic, and the script, which is just laughably cheesy in it's attempt to sound "urban" or "gangsta" or "hip hop" or whatever. San Andreas' dialogue and script felt 100% genuine. Saint's Rows, however, sounds forced, like they were too lazy to do their research and just decided to "wing it."
It would be easy to just make a Grand Theft Auto clone that's pretty bad (True Crime has proved that, for us). It would also be pretty easy to try to make your own game, using many of the famous GTA elements involved (I.E, CrackDown). But Saint's Row, however, is a true Grand Theft Auto imitation, that manages not to photocopy the game, but use it as a worthy starting off point for their own series. I like mostly everything in this game, and the only real things keeping it from being superior to every GTA game ever made on the older consoles, is it's cheesy dialogue, numerous small annoyances, it's and cheesy writing, and lame attempts to be "funny."
Other than that, Saint's Row is a worthy duplication of the "sandbox shooting and driving" genre created by GTA itself, and it definitely deserves to be played, even if only as a week-long rental, by ANY Grand Theft Auto fan.

ArcaniA: Gothic 4 Review

ArcaniA: Gothic 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gothic 4 was a purchase on a whim. I had a few days to burn until Fallout New Vegas came out and I was looking for something that would keep me occupied over the weekend. I had known about it for a couple weeks but didn't expect much from it. While at Gamestop, it caught my eye and I decided to give it a try. About a week later, I'm still playing the game and enjoying it immensely. It's got it's problems but nothing that kills it for me. Hit the jump to see my first impressions of Arcania: Gothic 4.
From what I understand, the Gothic series is pretty big in the UK but never really hit home in the states. We've gotten the games before but they usually received mediocre reviews with little fanfare. So, before it ever hit shelves, Gothic 4 had that going against it. Plus, throw in the fact that you probably never heard of it before me telling you (unless you're an RPG buff) and the game could float away into obscurity. If that happened, no one would notice, but you should. Why should you care about this game? Because it's not half bad and if you have taken a liking to games such as Oblivion - third person RPG's with swords, spells, and quests - you may very well find yourself enjoying it.
The game begins with a no named character who is a shepherd in a small island village. His wants to marry his girlfriend but her father forbids it. So, the father sends the man on three trials which basically teach you game mechanics. After your final trial and subsequent approval from the father in law to be, you and your betrothed make plans to set sail for the main land to go explore for their honeymoon. As you set out to meet your friend Diego who will transport you to the mainland, the village is attacked by an mad King's paladins as they ravage across the lands looking for a mythical shrine in the mountains that has some sort of holy forge. Tragedy strikes and your betrothed is dead and you are left with a burning hatred in your heart. Diego, who also survived the attack, informs you that he will take you to the mainland to search for this mythical shrine to keep it away from the mad King and to get your vengeance...and with that, Arcania: Gothic 4 begins.
The story isn't the games strongest point but that doesn't mean it's not manageable. The characters are a little dry and there are plenty of issues with the text (some not matching what's being said and others not making much sense) but the story isn't bad as a whole. It continues the story and gives you clear objectives to complete. You will always know what you need to be doing and in most cases, where you need to go to do it.
The gameplay, as I mentioned earlier, is a lot like Oblivion. It's not as detailed or open world as Oblivion and the quests are more straightforward, but the gameplay and the way you deal with villagers is the same. You will begin the game (after the tutorial) by going to a village and completing quests. You will have one main quest and a couple side quests. They can all be completed together since the world isn't too big, but you can skip the side quests if you don't want to be bothered. When you finish the main quest, you usually get some nice armor of the region (for your specific class) and then you can move on to the next village where you will rinse and repeat. Each stop at a village brings you one step closer to finding out about this temple with the forge in the mountains.
There aren't classes in the game, but you can sort of make your own. For instance, there are three types of "classes" you can make along with any combination of them. I usually go with melee characters so my guy has a shield, a one handed sword, and the heaviest armor. I could have also gone with a ranger type class and used leather armor with bows and knives. Finally, there is a mage type class that wears robes and dishes out spells. Each time you level up, you will be able to choose from a pool of talents where you would like to grow your character. There are health and strength for warrior type classes, precision and agility type talents for the rangers/rogues, and all manner of spells for the caster. This allows you to create a unique character and play any way you wish.
The graphics in Gothic 4 aren't that great. It's workable, but it won't be turning you head as you cross a vista or walk into a valley for the first time. I even caught the occasional pop in of grass trees while running through a zone. Don't let this deter you from the game though. It's not broken by any means, just not up to snuff with some of the AAA titles you see on the market.
Combat in Gothic 4 depends on your "class" that you have chosen. I wield my sword and shield so I do a lot of hacking and slashing. I also have access to my bow and magic spells by hitting the RT or RB respectively. If you played a character other than the warrior, you would rely on one of these instead of the sword and just use your melee weapon as a backup. The combat is streamlined nicely and you can hit LT to target an enemy, bringing up it's health bar and auto locking onto it so you can keep up with it's movements. Enemies dead bodies can be looted and you can keep/sell anything you find in the world, much like in other open world games.
I have to say, I'm kind of shocked by this game. I didn't expect it to be as enjoyable as it is. I thought it would be one of those games you play for a weekend and then trade in because it doesn't have the depth to keep you occupied. That's definitely not the case. Arcania: Gothic 4 is actually a pretty good tale that has fulfilling combat and a nicely fleshed out world to keep you busy. Don't go into it expecting to to find the next Oblivion. If you do, you'll be upset. Instead, look at it as a smaller developers attempt to create something new in an already overflowing game type. You may be surprised by how much you enjoy it.

Works really well for how cheap it is, definitely worth it. I like that you don't have to constantly change the batteries. The only thing is that you have to have the Xbox turned on to actually charge it, it lights up when plugged in but doesn't charge unless turned on.

Two Worlds 2 Review

Two Worlds 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wasn't expecting too much from this game. I personally was not a big fan of Oblivion. I tried to be, but there were aspects of the game that really bothered me such as all the monster leveling up with you. Having said that, I still bought this game hoping it would entertain me. For the first two hours, I really was not impressed. I did not like the character models, the way they moved, and I didn't like the voice acting. But I decided to give it a longer chance because I read someone say it took them an hour to get into it.
I am so happy I did. I love this game. Absolutely love it. I like it much better than Oblivion. I enjoy the combat much more as it feels more hack and slash. I like the fact that certain monsters will kill you with one or two blows. I have 9 1/2 hours logged into this game, and there is so much to do. The horse is difficult until you get used to it, once you do it is no problem. Remember that if you buy it and hate the horse.
For me, this game reminds me of an improved Diablo with the fighting, rapid looting, selling equipment, spells. If you ignore the voice acting which becomes easy to do as the game progresses, you will find yourself immersed in this game wanting to play more, to make your character stronger, and to make your weapons and armor stronger. There are graphical glitches, you definitely should load it onto your harddrive, and there are minor bugs here and there but they do not reduce the amount of fun this game is. As everyone else has stated, map is huge and there are so many side quests to do. Even though the voice acting is poor, the dialog is great and the characters have believable quests for you to do which makes them that much more enjoyable. I have played World of Warcraft, Oblivion, Sacred II, and I like the quests much more on this game than those. These quests actually have a bit of thought into them, instead of just making you "kill that guy because he has wronged me." Instead, you will hear him talk to you and tell you (and I am somewhat telling one of the quests but changing it a bit)"I want you to take care of this guy. By take care of this guy, you know what I mean. The reason I want you to deal with this is because when the Orc war was going on, he offered safe passage to my family in exchange for 500 gold. We paid him. On the day we were supposed to meet him, he disappeared. We knew the route of the passage, so we went. Little did we know he had led us straight into an ambush. It seems that is his way of making money..." and there would be more but you get the picture. It gives you an actual reason to want to do the quest instead of simple two line words that scroll across the screen. Anyhow, great game. I am glad I bought it.
I forgot to mention, so I will just throw it in here. If you like Rockband you may appreciate one part of this game. If you choose to, you can play musical instruments to earn money from people. To play an instrument, you need to buy one and you need to buy the music sheet. Each music sheet is different. To play, you have to use your controller and use both trigger buttons and both bumper buttons. Just like Rockband or Guitar Hero, the notes scroll down the screen and you have to hit the trigger or bumper when it passes the bar. But, it's hard. They scroll so fast. I would compare it to Expert on Rockband. But if you are good you'll enjoy it.
Edit: I am addicted to this game. Been looking for so long for a game to get addicted to and this one has done it. If you have been addicted to a game in the past but just couldn't find one - give this one a shot.

Dirt 2 Review

Dirt 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Coming from a background of Dirt, the Forza series, PGR series, Rallisport Challenge, and probably other racing games I have forgotten, I'm really enjoying Dirt 2. This review is based on about 10 hours with the demo, and 3 hours with the real game.
The racing in Dirt 2 is edge of control, white knuckle racing. The tracks are challenging, with most of those I've raced so far having a couple of nice high speed stretches, sweeping corners, and some tight, technical spots. One aspect that can make it that much scarier is that some tracks have multiple routes you can take. The differences are subtle, and the distance traveled is pretty much the same, but one will set you up for the next corner better than the other. This does introduce some intersection points in the track where the routes will cross which can lead to some nice t-bones. I found that I was physically cringing every time I ran through an intersection, full throttle, hoping for the best.
The different race modes include many types of off-road racing. There are timed point-to-point races where you won't see another car for the entire race, and there are rally cross style races where you can't seem to get through the race without hitting someone else. Both types are very entertaining. There are other types, but it basically boils down to whether or not there are other cars in your vicinity at the same time.
One feature in Dirt 2 that has made it much more enjoyable than the original Dirt is the flashbacks. There are few things more frustrating than coming to the end of a tight race, taking the last corner wrong, and getting 6th instead of 1st, or worse, totaling the car and getting a DNF. Flashbacks allow you to stop time, go back to a previous point in the race (seems like about 10 seconds or so max) and try that corner again. Obviously flashbacks are only available in tour mode, not in online play.
In tour mode you are able to set the difficulty for each race. Higher difficulty means the AI racers (which are quite good but also make mistakes) will be better and faster and that you will have fewer flashback, but you will also earn more prize money for winning the event.
Online play was available in the demo, and I spent 90 minutes playing with a close friend. We ran several races with others matched with us through xbox live. The rally type races were great. It was still point-to-point, timed, but everyone drove at the same time. The other cars on the track were only there for time reference. It was the other live drivers, but they were like ghost cars. In the other types, you are able to affect the other drivers by hitting them. I thought it was very enjoyable. Of course, the races can get dirty with people crashing into you all over the place, but that's a part of online play. I have not played online with the full version of the game, but I suspect the experience will be very similar.
I can see that I will be spending a lot of time in this game. The control is better than the original Dirt. The event selection is also a lot more engaging with real rally drivers inviting you to different parts of the world to compete. They have obviously put a lot of attention to detail in the game. The tracks and settings are immaculate. The cars are beautiful, and the other racers will even SAY your name. It's a pretty cool touch to hear Travis Pastrana say, "Hey Joel, nobody could touch you out there!"
I only have two gripes: One is that you still can't go very far afield when you wreck. If I really blow a corner, I would love to see my car roll over and over and over again. You only get that joy if your car happens to stay on or near the track. Unfortunately this is pretty standard fare for rally games.
My second gripe is that there is no split screen multiplayer. Once in a while it would be great to have a friend over and simply sit down and race each other. With this game he'll have to bring an xbox, a tv, and his own copy of the game and do system link, or stay at his own house and play over live. The live support is really great, so split screen will probably only be missed occasionally.
In summary, if you are looking for a real serious rally simulation, this isn't it. If you are looking for a very fun off road racing game with stunning visuals, great sound, good control, awesome tracks, nice cars, and edge of your seat action, this is it! I highly recommend it to the driving enthusiast.

Kinect Joy Ride Review

Kinect Joy Ride
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some of you may recall that Kinect Joy Ride was originally supposed to premiere as a free game for Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers; however, that changed when it got pulled into the Kinect lineup. While they have expanded the game beyond what was originally intended, it is still hard to justify the $50.00 price tag for what is offered on the disc.
The controls for Joy Ride require that you stand up for the duration of the game and they hold onto an imaginary steering wheel to control. Flips and other stunts are accomplished by twisting and turning your body off of jumps. While fun for a while, soon I was left wanting to sit back down and relax. However, as far as interactive entertainment racing goes, this is quite fun. Add in your friends or family and it is more enjoyable. Additionally, a nice touch is that Joy Ride offers (along with Kinect Sports & Adventures) is the use of KinectShare.com to share photos of you failing your arms about on Facebook.
I didn't really notice any lag while driving, but overall I would still say that steering an imaginary vehicle is hard to accomplish, but that may just take for time. It's hard to understand why Joy Ride doesn't offer speed control over the vehicles when the E3 promo video for Kinect had shown the player placing a leg forward or backwards to speed up or slow down. Maybe that is not possible since they reduced the quality of the Kinect Sensor camera to get production costs down, but I really have no clue.
The weirdest thing about JoyRide is that the entire game is only 1.5 GB in size. Given that some Xbox LIVE Arcade titles (i.e. Lara Croft: GoL) far exceed that size, I do not know why this simply could not have been a $15 arcade title (and it probably should have been). There is only a small selection of cars and tracks, but being Microsoft, I wouldn't be surprised to see some DLC come down the pipes for this. Ideally, I would really like to see Xbox partner with Hot Wheels to provide digital scans of the cars into the game. (The box states that it has the capacity for object scanning, but Microsoft has yet to reveal how that is to be used, if at all.)
Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone who bought a Kinect. It is fun, but whether it is worthy of the price remains to be seen. Ultimately I figure I will have enough enjoyment out of it to justify buying it and I think a lot of people are going to like this game.

Monopoly Streets Review

Monopoly Streets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If EA fixes the Issues / Problems / Bugs in this game, then I'll give this game 5 stars. Until then...UPDATE #2: EA has released another DLC item, a 3D "CITY" board called Stratosphere City for 560 MS Points. It's a futuristic city with hover cars. It has custom names for the properties and cards, unlike the prevoius DLC Championship board. Please Note: this is a "CITY" board so it has the buildings that are constructed as your build houses and hotels, etc etc...
UPDATE #1: EA just released some DLC for this game. The board is 240 MS Points and the tokens are 80 MS Points each.
Championship Board (Las Vegas 2009 Monopoly Championship theme). This board uses an official Monopoly game board since it's a recreation of the 2009 Monopoly tournament championship. There are NO custom names for the properties, community chest or chance cards.
Horse and Rider (Male Jockey) token
Cannon (Army Guy) token
Rocking Horse (Female Equestrian) token
PLEASE NOTE: This DLC is NOT DRM's locked so it can be shared amongst other gamer profiles (gamertags) on the same or different Xbox 360 consoles. Please Note: This review pertains to the Xbox 360 version of the game. Not all features / issues may be present across all platforms.
Finally, a video game console version of Monopoly that has an Online Multiplayer component.
I previously purchased Monopoly Party back when it was originally released on the original Xbox console and the more recent Monopoly video game for the Xbox 360 which was released just a couple of years ago. Both were good games, but they lacked an Xbox Live Multiplayer option so you were stuck play locally with friends/family and/or against the BOTs.
The two included 3D "city" boards for Monopoly Streets are great and add something new to the Monopoly franchise. The rest of the boards are 3D but don't have the "city" buidlings aspect. The surrounding envirnments are fun as are the custom names for all the properties. For the "city" boards, as you buy properties and build houses and hotels your property comes alives with 3D scenery, houses and hotels. Every player also has a skyscraper which represents their total worth and the height of the skyscraper increases/descreases during gameplay. You only get two of these "city" boards one of which has to be purchased. Apparently, there is another featured in a gameplay trailer and will be probably be available as DLC as EA has stated this game will feature DLC for characters (tokens) and boards.
All tokens and boards are compatible with every rule set and gametype options so you can mix things up and even use your own Xbox 360 Avatar as a playable character for use with any of the tokens. For Xbox 360 Avatar; props, pets, hats and costumes will NOT show up in game. Avatar shirts, pants, shoes, glasses, watches, and rings will show up on your character in game.
Provided Rule Sets: Official MONOPOLY, Speed Die, Short Game, Bull Market, Jackpot, Fast Deal, Custom. All rule sets can be edited to create your own gametype with a variety of options to choose from to make your own House rules. You can also ssave a custom rule set for use in the future.
Xbox Live Gametypes: Quick Match, Create Custom Match, Join Custom Match, Create Ranked Match, Join Ranked Match. Online Ranked matches cannot be started with BOTS (computer) but if a NON connection HOST player quits before going bankrupt they will be replaced by a BOT (computer). You can play with up to four people locally on the same Xbox 360.
The Monopoly Store is a nice touch and adds to the replay value as you try to earn Monopoly money to unlock additional content. Winners of a game gain just under 10,000 M and even the losers get some money, so if you are good you'll be rolling in the Monopoly money to unlock additional content.Unlockables in the Monopoly Store:
M = Monopoly Money used to buy items in the Monopoly Store
Available Tokens and their (Characters):
Top Hat (Magical Kid) - UNLOCKED at start
Shoe (Little Girl) - UNLOCKED at start
Moneybag (Burglar) - M 15,000
Car (Race car driver) - UNLOCKED at start
Wheelbarrow (Farmer) - UNLOCKED at start
Dog (Dog walker) - UNLOCKED at start
Cop Hat (Officer) - M 20,000
Battleship (Admiral) - UNLOCKED at start
Iron (Maid) - M 10,000Available Boards:
MONOPOLY City (3D board) - UNLOCKED at start
Cheese Board - M 6,000
Cardboard Board - M 7,000
Landmark City (3D board) - M 25,000
Classic Board - UNLOCKED at start
Jungle Board - M 9,000
Sweet Board - M 10,000
Plaza Board - M 5,000
Ice Board - M 8,000Overall it's a good game, and probably the best console based Monopoly game to date, at least on the Xbox/Xbox 360 but it does have several issues that need to be fixed/patched.Issues / Problems / Bugs:
1. If the connection HOST (person who starts a game) quits during an Online match (ranked or custom) the game will END for everyone in the game and NOBODY will get any credit for the game. That means nobody is declared a winner, nobody gets any Monopoly money for use in the Monpoly Store, and the stats don't update for whatever you did in the game.
The reason this happens is that there is NO Host Migration in the game, so if the HOST quits the whole game ends.
WARNING: If the connection HOST chooses to declare BANKRUPTY or goes BANKRUPT they "have to spectate" for the rest of the game and stay in the game until a winner is announsed by Mr Moneybags and wait for the game to automatically send everyone back to the Main Menu.
It is STRONGLY ADVISED that you HOST your own Online Matches and/or play with people who know about this issue otherwise, you'll more than likely end up with a connection HOST who QUITS not knowing that this ends the game for everybody. However, it is apparent that you don't necessarily become Connection Host even if you are the one to start/initiate the game.
This is also something that could be EXPLOITED by someone choosing to QUIT instead of having a loss show up on the leaderboards and their profile stats. Aside from doing this to GRIEF (annoy) people online.
2. Duing an Online match a human can go into the "Morgage and Build" menu, wait out the 60 second time, go back into it, rinse, repeat. Thus have a neverending turn in an attempt to GRIEF and make the other human player quit the game, for a win.
3. A BOT (computer) or human player's character can spin around in get put int he wrong direction and then get stuck on and/or fall off the game board and be unable to complete their turn. Thus making it immpossible for anyone else to take their turn. The game will never end and everyone will have to QUIT the game.
4. During the initial rolling of the dice to see who goes first, the dice will keep spinning or freeze and no one else will be able to take their spin and/or start the game.Enjoy!

Eragon Review

Eragon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Game type: Linear 3rd person
Genre: Action fighting
5 star rating system
Graphics 3 Fun 5 Story 4 Replay Value 2 Overall 3
Let me start off by saying that this game is good, not great. I was actually pleasantly surprised, because I asked for this game for CHRISTMAS after seeing it on the xbox website. To me it seemed like one of my all time favorite orig. Xbox games LOTR 2 towers. Then I read the reviews before getting the game and was horrified. Maybe I was surprised because I wasn't expecting much, but I found the game to be fun and have that familiar satisfying combat system that I loved in LOTR. You learn magic as you progress and it's awesome being able to push, pull, use fire, and fire magic arrows at enemies. There's a good mix of fighting and puzzles here. at times you must figure out where to jump, climb, and or shimmy and use magic to build bridges.
The dragon levels are a sore spot in the game. Lack of camera panning is a cramp, but dealable. True, this doesn't offer a lot of replay value and is shorter than some games, but actually about average for this type of game (not every game is going to have 100+ hours of game time like Oblivion). This may not be your bag if your more into sandbox style (GTA, Saint's Row) games. As I grew up with linear games I find sandbox games aren't my bag. I say it's a solid rental for players who enjoy linear story driven offline play.
What I generally do is pick up games used on ebay or Amazon and resell them when done. I generally break even, sometimes even turn a profit.
Good gaming to you all,
Stang05driver

Dynasty Warriors 6 Review

Dynasty Warriors 6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fun game but not altogether the epic I hoped it would be. I like the new characters designs and the different fighting styles and all that. Being able to take on hundreds of people at once and rake up a thousand kills on a regular basis is pretty cool. The graphics are brilliant but, I don't know, it just seems to be missing a lot of the content that Dynasty Warriors 4 had. Not to mention characters. Not only does this game feautre no new Characters but it subtracts from those already existing. Where is Meng Huo? Not in this game. Granted I haven't unlocked every acheivement but still if he was in the game there would be a nanman level or you would see him somewhere. (And why even have a Zhuge Liang Storyline without the nanman campaign? It would be like a Robert E. Lee Story without the battle of Gettysburg. Kinda lame.)
How is it that this game has less characters than the previous version. Generally the series gets more characters as it progresses not fewer. Not only that but of the few that remain, only a handful have musou story modes which is kinda lame(sure it would probably be hard to make storylines and movies for each character but that doesn't mean I have to like it) You can play the less popular characters in free mode but it just isn't the same.I tried creating my own storyline for Yuan Shao by having him play through a bunch of free mode battles but realized I couldn't since the battle of Guan Du only has two sides in this game. Cao Cao's and Lu Bu's. (Lu Bu wtf? How did he get involved in that battle) Speaking of Lu Bu, unlocking him is the only reason to play through half of the musou modes. Some of the charcters aren't as cool as the other, in my opinion.
Getting over the characters, or lack of them, and onto the actual gameplay the game plays well. The new renbu system is interesting once you figue out what it is. Although the same basic attack, charge attack scheme is in play, charge attacks are separtate from your main attacks, meaning that you can't put together any super charge attacks like in previous games. The charge attack looks the same whether you press it first or use it as a follow up to a series of regular attacks. That means that once you get unlimited renbu you don't even need to use the charge attack. You can just hammer on the x button. The charge attack is only really useful for breaking enemies blocks. Speaking of enemies, they are a bipolar lot. On the one hand the regular enemies do almost nothing but stare at you while you hack them to pieces while the officers while hand you your buttchecks. Also certain officers will get angry and then they do tremendous damage, enough to kill you in three or four hits. When they get into this state they glow with a flame. I've come to refer to these powerhouse's as 'flamers'. When you see a deadly flamer you need to save the game unless you want to risk losing all the exp you have gained in the battle. Unlike some of the games in the series you can't save your exp from a failed attempt. Sometimes free mode is the only way to get your chosen hero past a certain point.
Really though, long story short, while I like the game I would have liked it more if more characters were in it. Maybe they will fix this when they come out with Dynasty Warriors 6: Xtreme legends.

Based on the epic novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the genre defining series depicts the massive battles ignited by the fall of the Han Dynasty when three rebellious states moved to overthrow the Emperor of China. Featuring a new proprietary combat engine, Dynasty Warriors 6 delivers the exhilaration of single-handedly destroying thousands of soldiers on massive fields of combat. Schizoid Review

Schizoid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Schizoid is one of my favorite Xbox Live Arcade games. I do not recommend it as a 1-player game, but it is an excellent 2-player game.
The concept is very simple and addictive. The game is played via the top-down or bird's eye view perspective. One player is blue and can destroy all the blue enemies. One player is red and can destroy all the red enemies. The problem is, enemies of the wrong color are deadly to you!
There is no shooting, you simply have to touch the enemies of the right color to destroy them. Consequently, the game only uses one control per player: a joystick that determines which direction you move. The challenge involves coordinating efforts with your partner. Do you travel together or seek targets of opportunity? Can you trust and work together with your partner to lunge when you need to lunge and retreat when you need to retreat?
Some enemies are mindless, but others will avoid the player that can harm them and seek the player they can harm, making them very deadly. One type of enemy lays eggs which will hatch into more deadly forms if you don't destroy them in time.
Making it more challenging is the fact that you and your partner may start in completely different parts of the level, far apart. When apart, the camera zooms out so both players are visible at all times. Power-ups also add variety to many of the levels. The most unique power-up is one that stretches an "electric rope" between the two players, which can be used to defeat all colors of enemies, but don't stretch it too much or it may break.
Schizoid supports both 2-player local play (loads of fun), and 2-player remote play (which I haven't tried). Because the Xbox 360 has built-in audio chat capabilities with remote players, in theory, playing remotely may actually be easier, as you could then have a full screen dedicated to just your view of the level. Schizoid also supports multiple 1-player modes. You can either have the computer control the 2nd ship, or, for the masochist, you can control both ships with a single controller if you prefer. It is possible to get into a zone where 1 person controlling 2 ships can dominate the levels with ease, but a more common outcome is to be totally flabbergasted and overwhelmed trying to keep 2 ships doing different things simultaneously.
Regardless, the real strength of this game is its excellent 2-player co-operative mode. If you're looking for a good game to play with a friend, this is it.
